Dark contrast/black screen when watching videos

I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question but here goes:

Recently I have had the following issue: when I try to watch movies (be they DVDs, .wmv, .mpg etc...) the contrast either becomes so dark that the video is unwatchable or the screen just stays completely black. This problem arises both when I use my screen and when I use a TV I have hooked up as a second monitor to watch movies on.

I have tried the DivX player, Windows Media Player and PowerDVD - always the same result. When watching clips online (e.g. on YouTube) the image works fine. I have never messed around with the contrast settings at all. The only additional codecs I installed were DivX 6.8.

Can someone PLEASE help me out on this? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

ignore the above. issue has been resolved. somehow, the settings in the nvidia system panel that regulate contrast, brightness etc had been modified.
