3d Mark ready to sell you some Hardware?

I just popped over to Future Mark's website to see if the latest version was imminent

Would I like to check my PC against the minimum spec required? OK....go on then...

Java software, do I agree....blah blah...

Nah.....my Quad Core at 2.67, 4gig and old X1900XT are miles behind what this bad boy is gonna want...prolly my old DX9 card.

BUT... I was then offered a range of the most popular cards from 3DMark 2006, and also the most popular CPU's, and then a price check for each upgrade by hovering over the item.

OK...it was ALWAYS a selling tool, but the sheer bluntness of it was a suprise.

However...the screen shots look stunning Futuremark - Announcing 3DMark Vantage!

    3D Mark 06 was a huge disappointment.
Not only is it wildly off when it gives you your ratings but the stuff they try and peddle to you when you get to the site is almost embarassing for them.

They've been doing this blatant hawking of hardware for quite a while now. I guess the theory is that if you care that much about scoring an extra 500 3D marks you're also the kind of chump who's going to spend £200 on a new GPU to do it.

to be fair, is it really that much worse than what you guys (tech journalists) tend to do anyway?

Generally speaking you find some uses for the items you review, you list the price (often websites now have affaliate type froogle seraches for this) and where to get it from. On top of that often theres a prefered supplier in the case of smaller sites, from smaller nations, its the supplier who gave the sample, not the manafacturer.

Glass houses me thinks? Or is this more about the sheer bare faced cheak of their approche?

Yeah, at least the 3D Mark way is actually quite rationalised... It analyses your system and then suggests something that'll improve it. It may not be the best in class or the best value but it's just advertising in the end.

Re: 3d Mark ready to sell you some Hardware?

Vantage has been available for a while now. though what wicks me off is that you only get one shot at it. The old 3D marks at least you could run the basic benchmark as often as you like but it would turn off pro features. Meh.

    Oh, and 3D Mark 06 I get 11,614
