    Gnome vs KDE

Gnome vs KDE, who uses what & why.

Persnally I've always used KDE with SuSE, but I'm just putting 2 PC's togethr from scraps & I thought I'd give Gnome a try, see how/why/if it's different from my usual KDE environ.

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

    Gnome gets my vote.

I think it looks nicer, and I'm not much of a Linux user, so I havent got any more metrics to make my decision!

I used KDE for a start, my first foray into linux a few years ago was a Knoppix LiveCD that used KDE, but then I tried Ubuntu 5.10 and it used Gnome and I perfered its look and layout, and still do.

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

Is it KDE that's the more configurable of the 2?

Of the distros that I've played with they've all been KDE; just waiting for v4*to become 'mature' (i.e. about 4.11).

PCLOS (KDE) seemed to be very tweakable.

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

KDE is the more tweakable but I've been brought up with Ubuntu which prefers Gnome so I'm happier with Gnome now! I'm keeping a close eye on KDE4 which is promising a lot. Hopefully it can deliver.

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

I've just now been mucking about with Kubuntu 8.04 alpha 6, and have to say that firstly - wow, that Wubi thing is brilliant, you can install the OS, boot into it, and if you dont like it then uninstall the whole thing without mucking up your Windows config or boot. Really good news.
Anyway, as normally an Ubuntu man, i gave Kubuntu (KDE 4.02) a shot and really struggled - managed to download & install firefox, but then couldnt find out how to select or run it. I loaded up my IM client but couldnt find any option to log in.
I couldnt find out how to attach some sort of task bar or launcher menu.

    However it did look pretty.

I'm not giving up on it yet, i think it'll actually look great when it's ready, but that might be 6 months away yet. Gnome for me in the meanwhile.

    Well, WinXP mostly....

But that Wubi is bloody good

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

I prefer to use KDE as its very easilly configuable, but GNOME is nice and simple to use.

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

can't stomach kde. it never seems to work right - the apps are ugly, have fifty config screens each, and the "basics" like double-clicking files never seem to work properly

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

Prefer Gnome - has a 'cleaner' layout to my way of thinking. The KDE windows seem very broser based.

    Re: Gnome vs KDE

    KDE for me.

I've occasionally tried gnome over the years, but I always go back to KDE within a matter of hours. The main reason for me - konqueror as a file manager, not to mention some of the other neat tricks it can do like rendering man pages (manackage), and the protocols it supports (fish, smb etc).

Then there's k3b - still the best burning package I know

But for me the fact we have a choice is the most important thing - I still very much like and use some gnome apps such as gFTP.
