Recommend me a free firewall please

    Hi,

I'm looking for a firewall that will basically alert me when anything's accessing the internet and give me the choise of allowing it or denying it - so basically when something tries to get on the internet it should say "blabla.exe is trying to access the internet, Allow or Deny?" and "Tick here to use this action every time", so basically I build up my own set of firewall rules.

I don't want the firewall to have any stupid 'what it thinks is safe' list of programs, I want it to ask every time something tries to access the internet from my PC, even if it's a known Windows file.

Oh, and another important this is it must be nice and unobtrusive.

    Thanks,
    Craig.

Well you have two conflicting requirements there - do you want to be unobtrusive or do you want it to pop up and ask you every time a process tries to access the internet (which is pretty intrusive in my book)

    hey craig...

i think you should try out COMODO firewall its free. but the best thing is its got its own malware sercher so if anything does get into your computer you could use that to get rid of it. but the good thing is that comodo firewall explains wjhat the file is and is a risk or if its safe . but i may warm it has a lot of pop-ups buts its worth it.

Comodo will be getting some more functions soon, probably about the end of this month. See:

    https://forums.comodo.com/feedbackco...t19929.45.html

I'm still on v2.4, but will probably update in about 3-4 weeks.

I meant unobtrusive as in the only thing it'll ask me is what I want it to ask me (so in this case permissions). Also being low on system resources etc.

I'll try Comodo then, thanks everyone

I would definately go with Comodo also. One of the only free firewalls that works on Vista 64 bit. It has an installation mode on it also which is handy for when you are putting new software on so the Defense+ settings don't continuously ask if every file is safe!

How about the NAT in your router and Windows Firewall? always been perfectly adequate for me..

you will be able to tell it which ones you definitely don't want to access the internet, but it won't pop up at every opportunity?

Comodo, on some sytems, is ~10MB and 0 CPU. That's v. good nowadays.

Don't really like the Windows firewall because it has tons of programs/files that it assumes are safe, and maybe they are... but I still like to block/allow exactly what I want.

Gonna try Comodo some time tonight on my second PC & see how it goes.

Another vote for Comodo here but with Defense+ disabled else you'll spend more time clicking popup dialogs

Re: Recommend me a free firewall please

I've been using Comodo too, on my XP Pro installation, and I like it. I can confirm it works with Steam no problem, too. I did however turn off its Defense+ feature (I do a lot of installs and such and found it annoying). However, it is a neat feature and easy to toggle on and off. The free edition of ZoneAlarm is very good too; I used it for years before I got Comodo, and I still use it on my Vista installation.

Comodo is great. As 2Cold Scorpio says turn the Defence+ feature off. It is rubbish.
