    technet or partner

    Hi,

I've had a bit of a move round at work and am now in a position where I really need to be playing around with a few setups in a non-live environment before rolling them out or recommending we upgrade to xxx. Anyway was trying to determine which would be the best microsoft sub for me, technet/technet plus or joining their partner program - has anyone had experiences of the latter - its looking more like the partner will suit me fine enough, but offers no current sub including XP, which we currently use, annoyingly... I'm not a dev so MSDN isn't necessary, unless i've read that wrong.

    Both :-)

    Technet for Beta software.

Become a registered partner then get an Action Pack subscription to allow you to get access to lots of MS software for a cheap subscription (well cheap in terms of what you get!)

    Re: technet or partner

Have to say i'm still leaning towards the partner program, mainly due to cost! I am thinking I could just use work XP licenses anyway if necessary.

Ho hum. Still got 180 days (well last time i looked) to decide - just downloading the time trial evals at the moment.

    Re: technet or partner

I'd go with Technet if you're after various pieces of software cheaply to test. Simply get the server pack for your domain server and you're set. If you're company is worried about the cost, point out that they can "test" the various pieces of software for quite a long time (such as the latest version of Office, new Exchange version etc)

AFAIK Partner status requires that you sit various tests to prove you're compitant to supply Microsoft software.

    Re: technet or partner

Depends on what job you do and what your company does.

If you can get it - join the partner scheme and join the Microsoft ISV program, it gives you an MSDN subscription with 5 user licences for £260 a year, inc vat.

Thats an absolute bargin, however you do have to be a software developer and be planning to release a commercial product within 24 months.

Other than that the action pack is pretty good value - not as nic as ISV but the requirements are lower, and you can join that scheme just by being an "IT Professional". As Lucio says they have recently added in some "tests" to sit before you can get the action pack, but they are not difficult if you know the slightest thing about Microsoft and IT.

Technet is OK for testing against the latest releases of software, but the licence terms there are much more restrictive..although if you need to be testing against new microsoft products and can't get on the ISV scheme then it would work out better than the action pack for you.

In short, if possible, get on ISV..otherwise go for technet.
