For those who use Linux, it would seem possible to recover deleted files; it's a bit beyond me so here's the link:

Thank you - that is one of the most interesting links and descriptions of the ext3 file system I have seen in a while.

its actually quite a nice insight into it.
often when people produce standards documentation, they have to explain things in a convoluted fashion, normally protecting their lesser points with the termininal intensity of a babylon 5 fan.
Writings like that are almost more a description of the journey he's gone through finding out about it, describing only what he needs to know, conceptually from someone who's trying to figure out where data is.
good link!

Excellent link, may come in useful someday (though I hope I won't need it), thanks.
It looked useful to me as I'm slowly drifting towards Linux - when XP Pro no longer functions usefully I'll make the move, so that's some time yet.
I'd seen something about the difficulty of undeleting files in Linux and I use Shift-Delete so sometimes have to recover a file in XP. Having a similar, but default, situation was a bit worrying.

I know - but I still haven't broken the habits from small HDDs and trying to keep some free space. Also have quite a lot of private files for some friends, so in the habit of using Ctrl-k (in PowerDesk Pro) to wipe them when no longer needed.
At least with Shift-Delete the files are recoverable!

I've been considering TrueCrypt, but as it's not good enough for HMRC...
