I have been religiously scanning all and every file downloaded onto my PC since I bought my first PC 7 years ago. Recently I've been looking at buying new antivirus software and the question as to whether it was still necessary to manually scan downloaded files before opening occurred to me. This is due in part to having moved in with my lady friend and am facing the prospect of sharing the use of my PCs with her!
Having seen Bitdefender and Kapersky come top of the class in a recent antivirus group test I went to their respective websites armed with this question.
- The response from Kapersky a mere 23 minutes after I emailed them my question was that 'on-access' scanners had been doing that for years and would automatically scan a file you attempt to open before allowing it to be opened.
- On Bitdefender's website there was a spiffeh chat support dingus which when I found it put me in touch with Johnathan who told me that the free version of Bitdefender antivirus didn't auto scan files but the fully paid up version: antivirus 2008 did.
Maybe this is common knowledge but it's something I didn't know so I thoght I'd share it just in case some other techno-hermits hadn't heard either
I'd be interested to hear how anyone who has been running a non-free antivirus solution has found the level of protection if they haven't been manually scanning files?
