How much is this website worth?

Hi guys, an old friend of mine asked me to make him a simple and quick website for him.

I'm not really a web designer, and I only know basic HTML, so even though the website is very simple it took me well over 12 hours to make. I even designed him his company logo and had to get my girlfriend to translate the Portuguese version of the website.

So how much should I charge him for it? He has paid for the hosting and name already.

The website is Welcome to PR1MEIRA Driving School

    Dont laugh.

Not sure how much it is worth, but its a very nicely designed website!
If I was to have a random guess how much I would say between £250 and £300

Thats a cracking little site you have there mate
I've seen much worse chanrged at a couple of hundred easily. Don't sell your self short, that's a really nice effective design.

Although the only thing I would say is make sure it validates:
Validation Results - W3C Markup Validator

Can cause less headaches later on when browsers are updated, which sometimes breaks non w3c code across versions.

Looks good - I'd say a minimum of £200 for 12 hours work. Remember to consider a cost for updates. Adding extra photos, changing prices etc is a bit of a fag and you don't want to do it for nothing.

You also may want to fix the cars4sale link. It doesn't go anywhere and needs a fix IMHO.

    Nice compact site :-)

On my browser the portuguese site has some wierd lines on it though (firefox 2.0.0.12 on Fedora 7). I know you weren't asking for that kind of info so sorry if you've already noticed or aren't bothered :-)

Re: How much is this website worth?

    Nice.

Quick question, did you photoshop the picture at the top of the two cars? Did you flip the Renault image horizontally? Is the "L" on the roof still back to front?

    Otherwise, as Hex says, either
total = (what do you want to be paid per hour x 12)
Or, guess at market rate. Commercial outfits will often charge from £500 per day for a developer (they don't pay us anything near that mind) and contractors seem to range from £200 - £350 per day.

But if he's a mate, consider the goodwill and references. This'll look good on portfolio / CV.

Only thing I would say is really echoing Agent. To improve your Search engine optimisation, at the very least you need to add "alt" tags to all your images, especially the ones which are really text pretending to be an image (like in the menu). Ideally, the menu links should have target tags too.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Re: How much is this website worth?

it would be silly to charge less than £250. Enless you get some major CV help.

But i have to ask, is a portugease translation actually useful? Or is it just more data to maintain? (sorry if i'm been a negative nancy)

    Thanks all for the info

I just flipped it around lol.

Thanks for that also, will check that.

and ty templar87, hadn't noticed that.

is this the first site you've designed?
not the first, but I haven't really done many.

But i have to ask, is a portugease translation actually useful?
He needed a Portuguese version of the site, as over 60% of his customers are either Brazilian or Portuguese.

Thanks all, I think I will be charging him £300 for it, as I helped him buy the domain name, the host, designed his business cards and taught his brother in law how to make small price updates.

then charge him more, if the translation is actually needed for over half his customers, you can charge him AT LEAST an extra £200 for a 'professional' translation (ie non robotic). Thank your girlfriend

I'm led to believe translators charge around £60 per 100 words, which is probably around how many that site contains. £200 sounds a bit unfair really...

Artwork been translated, and the price of having it all under one roof (ie, only one bill).

if you imagine it was a seperate firm, proofs of all text used in art would have to be thought of, before the art was implemented, so when it came to making the art, the translations where ready etc. Not too mention the translator checking the art.

£200, its bloody cheap for that.

Artwork? It's website text! :-P Inserting the text into an image is an implementation choice - surely there's no way a client would accept that justification? Especially not at more than a 200% increase in the price.

I'm getting dodgey artifracts on the contact us page, top right using Firefox 2.0.0.12 on Ubuntu 7.10.

I'm guessing the use of tables and split image buttons isn't helping for the navbar here.
