Vista: New service pack, new problems, new incompatibilities

OK maybe the title is a bit dramatic

When you try to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update you can get error: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.

To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer Windows Vista SP1.

Crappy drivers and software screw up an OS.

    That's news that is.

Re: Vista: New service pack, new problems, new incompatibilities

the problem with SP1 seems to be it is extremely dependant on hardware mix. If you don't have the right mix, you will get problems.

Thankfully I've never had any problems so far(touch wood).

Hope they sort this out by full on release time.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Re: Vista: New service pack, new problems, new incompatibilities

i hear reports of just how screwed up some drivers ARE

fr'example, the driver used by an impact sensor in one laptop (used to try and send the machine into an anti-data-corruption frenzy if it thinks it's being dropped) relies on reading values from the windows kernel, using hard-coded memory addresses. values that were never meant to be published for driver developers to access. vista sp1 obviously has a new kernel

imagine if your policy when getting off a bus was "i don't care where the bus stopped, i will walk a precise number of steps in given directions, and will definitely be where i need to be at the end of it". then walked off a bridge. whose fault would it be?

Great... the new update makes the borders in WMP11 go from black (RGB 0,0,0) to grey (RGB 16,16,16) when in full screen mode.

    Anyone know of any solutions?
