Starting out with Vista Media Center, tips?

    Hi all,

Just installed Vista Home Premium x64 at the weekend there. Have done the basic setup with Media Center and it seems fine (other than no remote just now because the Soundgraph iMon drivers for Vista suck unbelievably badly). Was hoping for some suggestions for:

    1. A codec pack for playback of divx/xvid/various other movie formats. A mate mentioned ffdshow but the version on sourceforge.net is from 2002 - surely that's not right?
    2. Suggestions for places to get plugins etc., I'd like some sort of MSN messenger plugin that could pop up when contacts sign in/sign out/message me for a start, if there's any sites with cool plugins in general I'd like to hear about them. Did a couple of google searches already but didn't really turn anything up...

    Cheers in advance,

what graphics card you got? Its worth making sure any codecs can leverage its acceleration for MPEG etc.

the people who make WinDVD have a nice codec for DVD playback, which is very good with nvidia cards and not producing tempurature i've found (ie silient running)

    updated for moderner nvidia cards
    NVIDIA Media Center Extensions
(this is assuming you care about such things).

Then theres the filetype extension aid if you have flac/ogg, the link for which escapes me (on lappy atm, with media pc off). Its actually a WMP plugin.

"ffdshow tryouts" has recent ffdshow builds, if you want

and TheAnimus is probably thinking of either the "haali media splitter" or "Ogg DirectShow Filters", both of which will enable oggish formats

nope, its not the enabling of the formats via CODEC, its the reading of the track information.

WMP Tag Support Extender - Home

    remebered the name of it

as for where to use the core or illunimable codec, thats easyily found. This little beauty was a bit harder to come across!

It won't. And it's utterly crap.

If you need to install a codec pack, then the Vista Codec Pack (with x64 addon) is the only way to go. Personally I just install the codecs I need. Tried, tested, problem free and if there was any problems, I'd know exactly what was causing it.

I couldn't agree more - here's the linky Vista Codec Pack

After several installs I couldn't recommend this pack enough for VMC! There's a wealth of useful info on there too.

Messenger support was dropped from XPMC - but will reappear later this year in VMC (or it's replacement) I remember reading (Windows Live for TV or something).
Edit: check out this - In Orbit

Re: Starting out with Vista Media Center, tips?

Cool, thanks for the tips. I went for the Vista Codec pack in the end. I used to use KLite, a version from about 2 years ago, on XP. I tried newer ones but had problems so kept going back to the one that worked. Didn't want to try it on Vista because I don't know the ins and outs of the new OS yet so didn't want to risk trashing anything. Will see how I get on with the VCP stuff (with x64 components).

Thanks for the heads-up on In Orbit. Looks pretty snazzy, way more functionality than I'll need (just basic IM really) which is why I liked the My MSN Messenger plugin on MediaPortal. Shame it didn't work really...
