    No Swap on Vista

    Hey Guys,

I finally built my new machine, and overclocked the Q6600 to 3Ghz. I have 8 GB of memory and was windering if it would be a good idea to turn off swap.

    Re: No Swap on Vista

why did you buy 8gig of RAM?

if your going to use anywhere near that 8gb then you'll need a page file.

If your not going to use that much RAM, then no, you won't need a page file.

Myself, i'd be tempted to fork out the dosh for enough RAM to run without a page file, or an SSD

    Re: No Swap on Vista

whether there is a need for ME or not to have 8GB mem is different story, however its cheap so I got it, I always have lots of apps running, and i am running 64bit so why not go past the new 4gb norm?

I do some video editing, it does help

I'll just go tell the CAD team that..

I'd leave the swap on in all honesty - i've never seen any real benefit on desktops.

Yes there is. Come and deal with some of the 3D app's I have do and they will eat as much RAM as you give them
Heck, you don't even need to use specialist apps. 3D Studio Max will happily eat 8gig given a big enough scene.

Then there is the entire multi-program thing to consider. I like having 3dmax / Maya open on one monitor, Photoshop on the other, and Unreal 3 engine on the other. I hate having to unload programs just to launch another one.
