Question PS3 Xubuntu - Mounting a SMB Share

    Dear Linux Experts,
I've recently installed Xubuntu on my PS3 (and DirectHex I did read your write up!). Anyway, I've got it running okay apart from when I try and mount a SMB Share. I run the following command:

    sudo smbmount //192.168.1.151/vidclips /home/leon/vidclips

This works and I can see the video clips (avi) but when I run then with Vlan player it suffers from stuttering.

Now if I browse the same share from windows they run fine even over wireless.

Am I missing something? Or is just the Linux PS3 limiting me?

    Thanks in advance,
    Leon

What type of videos, resolution wise?
IIRC Xubuntu has zero RSX support, meaning all video is decoded in software. For more demanding videos, this could cause stuttering.

    Wait for Jo though

Ahhh that would possibly explain it. I might try the new version of Yellow Dog Linux instead to see how that goes Ta for reply.

I actually don't know if any Linux for the PS3 has RSX support....
There was a major development in the area a while back, but I've no idea if anything has come of it.

Re: PS3 Xubuntu - Mounting a SMB Share

there have indeed been some major developments - highly experimetal, and AFAIK no distro includes them

forums.ps2dev.org :: View topic - The hunt for HV's FIFO/Push buffer... is the place to read up on it

also prone to breaking with FW updates (since sony don't actually want people to use ps3 linux, it's just a marketing gimick)
