SATA2 Driver Troubles, Please GOD Help Me

Hi I recently buggered up my attempt at Dual Booting so I thought screw it and have started again on (Old Reliable) Windows XP.

I use to have a 230GB SATA2 Drive which was visble on Vista, and now its not on XP :sigh:, so I went to my Motherboards website

Downloaded the SATA Drivers (JMicron, or something), Installed them, restarted and its still not visble.

I looked in 'Disk Management' to see if it was picking up at all and found this:

It says its free yet I know there is over 100GB of files on it and still I can't access it at all.

Please Oh Please, someone help me.

Im 99% sure Windows XP32 does not support GPT partitions. The only way you can access the data is boot into an OS that does like Vista (dont know if its both 32/64 bit versions, but 64 bit certainly does or Win03, maybe XP64? unsure) copy the data elsewhere, repartition it and copy the data back

Windows XP 64 bit can read from and write to GPT disks, Windows XP 32 bit cannot. No vsersion of Windows for the standard PC architecture can boot from a GPT disk. (Oviously, Vista can read/write to GPT disks, but again cannot boot from them)

Bullocks, That was my worst fear so I guess the only option is, to find 100GB of free space, and download a copy of XP 64-bit, cheers for the help

There is a utility in XP 64 bit that allows you to do that

HOW TO: Change a GUID Partition Table Disk into a Master Boot Record Disk in Windows XP

I don't think fdisk will allow you to do that on a 32 bit system because there is a protective MBR on the disk at LBA0 (normal place) while the GPT sits on LBA1.

The only other way I can think of is to use something like the liniux dd command to overwrite LBA 0 and LBA 1, so destrying the protecive MBR and the GPT. You could do that with a linux live CD. That would of course make any file system data on the disk inaccessible so you would then have to create a new MBR partition set and then format to create a new NTFS file system.

I think you can access is from a linux bootable CD and you should then be able to access it and copy the files.

    haven't tried it though.

You can certainly access NTFS file systems on an MBR partitioned disk, but I'm not sure what support there is for a GPT disk. A quick Google search suggests that parted (not Gparted) will recognise a GPT label, but that is not the same as accessing it, or necessarily changing it. There were also a couple of items suggesting that GRUB can use a GPT disk, although there would be a fudge of some sort, because unless you are using EFI arcitechture (Apple Mac and Itanium processor systems) you can't boot natively from a GPT disk. (GRUB may get round that by changing the protective MBR at LBA 0 to proviode a chain loader to read the GPT, but that is only speculation on my part - I haven't researched it - if anyone knows differently, I'd be interested to hear about it)
