Also expect it to stop working if you change your graphics card to ATI... My ubuntu doesn't load anymore
Oh well, at least good old XP is still working!
cheers just thought id try it and yeah i know it isnt windows and i have a nvidia card![]()
whats linux like for gaming? instead of using xp ?
If you're planning on using the system in your "my system" with the 8800GTS (re-read your post, seems your not...), you may have one or two issues that may mean that you have some extra configurations to do before you get a desktop (at least I did).
I found a program called envy helped here.
I think "remember it's not windows" applies here.
You can play games on it, but don't expect any more than 60% performance compared to windows.
or grab the 8.04 beta on the ubuntu website
the issue ajbrun mentions is quite correct - the nvidia driver in the current "stable" ubuntu release, 100.14.19, supports several 8000-series cards, but not the 8800 GT, 8800 GTS 512 or GeForce 8800M. the beta release supports all cards up to but not including the 9000 series, without use of special tools (like the aforementioned Envy)
you have to load most games through wine... I wouldn't bother tbh
If you want to try linux to get a feel for it, you could run it through a virtual machine. There are a couple of free solutions; VirtualBox and Virtual PC 2007 although the latter does require a a few additional steps (they work with 7.10 too but I've yet to test 8.04) to get Ubuntu running smoothly - nothing major and once done it runs a treat. VMware is another option but it costs.
It least that would allow you to continue using your existing OS until you're comfortable.
yeah so im probmrly gna stay with xp for the moment on my gaming machine but proberly gna still try it on a media pc im gna get
Yeah it does. I could clearly tell the difference between the Windows and Linux (under Ubuntu) clients online. It wasn't even a splitting hairs thing, it is far smoother on my system under Ubuntu.
Does UT3 have a Linux client? I don't really like UT3 that much compared to 04....it was supposed to ship with it like 04 but after their new found partnership with MS, I've no idea if it went though.
meh. thats a pain in the arse. more so considering its not even a hardware thing.
Heck, there isn't really any major physics used online in the game compared to others. Besides, there is a server for Linux isn't there? Considering most of the hit detection is done server side in the unreal engine, I'm really struggling to see the issue over ageia.
