Problem with USB devices on XP

A friend of mine called me yesterday explaining some problems she is having with her laptop.

"When i had windows media player on and i plugged in a usb cable and it froze the screen, i turned it off and back on again but now everytime i plugg in a usb cable it freezes and i have to switch it off. It works other than that except i cant plugg any usb cables in as it will freeze my comp and it doesnt recognise the device at all"

I cant really think of anything to help her and as she is in portugal i cant go round and have a look. AAny ideas anyone?

Tell her to check the connections inside the USB port. I had an issue with pretty much the same thing - one of the pins was damaged inside and shorting on the case. This was then freezing the laptop due to it shorting.

Windows is a fussy with USB had major probs with external devices paticulary my PDA.

same sort of troble as you describe, answer was to go into device manager, on the view options seleect "view hidden device" and remove anything your not using there is often loads left behind!!! seems to force windows to reset usb devices and can fix these probs.
