Question ps3 linux? is their an official / whats best??

i know people always say about how linux is personal preference and i know this lol. what i'm asking IS...

yellow dog linux... wiki says something about it being the "offical linux distro"? how can it be the official distro? I thought linux was 3rd party/community based? so am i to understand that it's developed by sony themself's or just that it implys its the first/main dedicated linux project or what?

if the above is true or whatever does that mean rsx isn't locked down so you can have visuals/3d etc etc?

what is the best distro to use for features. for example my main linux os was and will always be ubuntu... it has everything i need/want... how good's psubuntu? is it made by their community or someone else working solo converting it each time a release comes out?

without 3d etc what is the ps3 capable of? no hd video/divx playback i take it?

Good riddance. Wish I'd done it about a year ago.

oh and whats the max size hard drive i can use? i'm planning of using a sata hard drive 3.5 with the cable plugged inside and the hard drive in a silicon bag or a external enclosure with a standalone powersupply for the hard drive... so could i put a terabyte in?

Re: ps3 linux? is their an official / whats best??

yellow dog 5 was developed with assistance from sony, to be the first ps3-specific distribution. once upon a time, it was even going to be preinstalled on all consoles

NO distro comes with reliable access to RSX (some preliminary work has been done, but it requires specific older firmware versions to work)

ps3 ubuntu is Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
ps3 kubuntu is Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
ps3 xubuntu is Xubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
in all the above cases, the small amount of RAM you have access to can and will cause issues. perhaps reading HEXUS.gaming - Review :: Running Linux on the PS3 - A detailed view of what's out there : Page - 1/6 is worth your while.

i don't know about drive size limitations.

Re: ps3 linux? is their an official / whats best??

to be honest I just want it to double as a linux download box to sit under my tv...
sounds like the ram would be enough for this.
all I need is gaim/pidgin and a browser/download programs and it'll do what i need it to.
going to use a sata cable and some external enclosures to plug a 3.5 into the internal hdd and have a usb connected external 3.5 for the linux storage as ps3 allocates 10gb to linux/ps3 so I'll give the ps3 the first TB hard drive and 10gb to install linux and then use a external drive for the linux's storage/home...
oh and use external power connectors obviously.
cheers for the links gutsy will be nice. ubuntu's what is preferred to be honest.
if it is slow i can always use "ghost" i think its called? instead of gnome...
    sorted.
