    Vista going crazy

Everytime I turn my PC on, I get about 3 'Stopped working' pop ups.

    Winx64 Helper
Windows host process (Rundll32) - this is when i clicked advanced display options.

and ill name the other one when I next restart.
I dont know whats causing the problem, plus I frequently get Windows Explorer 'Stopped Working' when doing simple things like opening a picture...

Is this a common vista error that can be fixed with a patch(s), or is my install messed somehow? It hasnt always been like this though :S

WinSideBar is now another.....this is getting annoying

ANOTHER thing thats gone crap is when I go to personalize > colour schemes > i no longer get the option to choose a colour (for the top of windows etc). I get an old XP 'Appearance' tab (when you right click Desktop and Properties in XP)

Have you tweaked any settings, or removed any programs recently? also are you on Service Pack 1, long shot though but perhaps installing Service Pack 1 for Vista may help fix your issues.

    Re: Vista going crazy

To be honest, and this is just my view, someone here may have had this and got around it, I would backup and reformat, it does sound like something in Vista has corrupted and just won't work, when you come to patching single .dll files you could be there forever.

    Re: Vista going crazy

rundll32 is a generic host proccess, and the x64 helper iirc might well be hosting that.

so odds are you've got one app you've installed, thats failing on start up.

Check event viewer and you might be able to narrow down which app it is.
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)

    Re: Vista going crazy

Actually, now would be good time to install SP1, seeing as you have a fresh Vista install. Less likely to have problems that way. I had to reformat just to get SP1 to isntall in the first place because some system files had gotten corrupted. If SP1 messes up a fresh install, and you have to reinstall again, you haven't lost much effort, really. Its generally a good idea to get all Windows updates before doing much else on a fresh installation.

    My method generally is:
    Install OS
    Get all Windows updates
Get drivers WU didn't, or replace those that did with particular ones (video card drivers come to mind)
Install security software (you shouldn't really need Anti-virus with WU, and Windows Firewall should hold up well enough while WU runs; this also helps lessen initial issues)
Set personal settings, install remaining software, restore data, etc.

This is my opinion, granted, but its more or less what I do, and it seems to work.

    Re: Vista going crazy

Did you get SP1 automatically through WU, or did you use the redistibutable .exe and/or the SP1 hack for WU? If you can't get it through WU it may well be that you have some of the hardware affected and that Microsoft haven't released it to you for a reason...

This sounds almost identical to a problem a friend of mine recently had, and the problem occurred when he installed service pack 1 although it didn't manifest itself for a few days. It got to the point that it took several minutes to boot and upon hitting desktop at least 4 error messages appeared. Also the performance became awful. He was having problems before hand and though SP1 would sort them out, guess he was just unlucky. He's gone back to XP for the time being.

Seems to be a bit of a mixed bag SP1, its help some people and made other peoples problems far worse.
