    It finally arrives :)

That is the new GPU client for ATI 2xxx and 3xxx cards

I will have a play with it over the weekend on my 3870 and see what the points are like.

    Link to the client

    Folding@home: GPU2 open beta

From the FAQ it scores 1000 points per day on the referance system which is a 3850 512Mb with a Athlon X2 4000+

    Re: It finally arrives :)

    Dammit... I just upgraded my HD2600pro to a 9800GTX
Is there any point putting my ati card in a pci-e 1x slot to do this? I suppose its going to be more hassle then its worth... using ATI and nvidia drivers at the same time can't be stable!

    Re: It finally arrives :)

Well shock of shocks it ran all right without a hitch!

So I hear you ask "What sort of points are you getting?" the answer "Not enough!"

Right time for some numbers, from what I have seen so far each GPU2 work unit is worth 97 points.

My system is a 3870 with GDDR4 running at 810MHz Core and 2250MHz Memory and my CPU is a E6550 @ 3.5GHz and 2GB DDR2 @ 998MHz 5-5-5-15. It takes me 84 minutes per work unit that gives me a points per day of 1663 or 69.3 points per hour.

Compare that to the SMP client running at 3.5GHz which provides me with a work unit every ~21 hours for a points per day of 2031 or 84.6 points per hour.

So any other observations? Yes I draw more power folding on my GPU than on my CPU (as you would expect) will confirm numbers later but about 30W more. When GPU folding you still use 1 cores worth of CPU time. Oh and perhaps most worryingly it was only running my GPU at ~90% so I was missing 10% performance!

Will make some more observations and play with the client over the next few days and add my findings to the how points are calced thread

    Re: It finally arrives :)

I wonder if this works on integrated chipsets. I could give it a bash on my new HTPC client which runs the 780 chipset.

It can also me massively overclocked.

    Re: It finally arrives :)

It could be worth a try...

Running now with the SMP and GPU2 clients at the same time, which if the trends are following as expected should net me a higher points per day than either on its own ~2200 ppd (91.6 pph).

I also notice that when running both together GPU activity fluctuates from ~30% to ~60% I guess this is to do with not having enough CPU time which would suggest that having a faster processor would potentially max out my 3870, with this in mind I guess that overclocking the GPU will have little or no effect on the production as the CPU can't keep up as it is!

Just read something interesting on the F@H blog explains the less than optimal GPU usage

    you are probably right.

that pc is only on when i'm watching TV too, so isn't on much and it would probably interfere with MediaPortal.

    Actually I don't think I'll bother
