    vista upgrade on xp

I have a corrupt or missing file (system32/hal/dll) or something similer. I dont have the original copy of xp (proffesional), so i cannot re install the file or do a clean install of the operating system.
Firstly, can i restore this without the disc? I have looked but i cant seem to find any info on the matter.
If not, can i buy the upgrade version of vista (it will probably be home premium) and install it even though i can`t even boot the system fully in its current state?

    TIA

    Re: vista upgrade on xp

If your XP install is corrupt, the best you can do is perform a clean install of Vista. Personally, if I were you I'd order a cheap HDD and an OEM copy of Vista at the same time.

What you can then do is install Vista on the new disc, make that your primary boot disc, then grab your data off the old HDD, format it down and use it as a spare data storage drive.

Thanks, compared to the retail version on vista, how good are the OEM's? Do you get exactly the same features with them?

    thanks

    Re: vista upgrade on xp

just did a bit of research, am i correct in saying that the OEM is for one motherboard only? If so, when you change the motherboard does that mean there will be no display on start up. Ive had three asus motherboards and all have been blank screens when i start it up. It never even occured to me that my XP at the moment was an OEM version. (dell PC)

Could this be the cause of the no display while booting problem?

    thanks

OEM means that you can only install the OS on one motherboard. If you buy a new motherboard, you cannot by law, install the OS again using the new motherboard.

Physically the OS will install on any number of motherboards (PC's). Whether you can activate a second or multiple times there after is another matter.
If you do this though, it amounts to basically theft.

    Choice is yours though.

    Re: vista upgrade on xp

As Blitzen says - the only differences between an OEM and a retail version is the licensing condition and support.

A full retail version entitles you to re-install the software on different computers - in practice this means machines with different motherboards. (although only on one at a time!) so if you upgrade the mobo, you can legally transfer the OS. You can also turn to MS for support (!)

An OEM licence only allows you to install the software on one machine - ever. You can change some peripheral components, but if the machine is scrapped (effectively the mothernboard discarded) you cannot then re-install the software on another - when the machine dies, the licence dies. You are also responsible for your own support (if you install it) or if you buy a machine from (say) Dell, with an OEM version, Dell have to provide the support.

The theory is that an OEM such as Dell sells you a machine, but prevents you from taking the software later and installing it on something else, which Dell of course wouldn't support. OEM versions come with a licence agreement that you are required to stick on the machine. If you did install the software on another machine, after it has already been activated on different machine, you might not be able to reactivate it. Blurred areas are if the mobo fails and an identical replacement is not available when you might have to argue a case. If you bought the machine from (again we'll use Dell) that would be an issue for Dell to sort out - particularly if it was under warranty) - the position is less clear for self build.

It is a debateable point whether a single end user really qualifies as an OEM - but since MS and their retailers sell them to single system builders, it doesn't seem to matter to them - and this point has been debated at tedious length in other Hexus threads.

However... none of this should put you off self building or using an OEM licence - many people do without problems or issues, but you should be aware of the implications before you start.

    Re: vista upgrade on xp

the phrasing from the license is "direct replacement", not "exact replacement". it's perfectly reasonable to swap, say, an abit socket 939 board for an asus 939 board, and keep the license. swapping a 939 board for a core2 system because you can't be bothered to track down a sensible not-taking-the-piss replacement is another matter

    Re: vista upgrade on xp

Not sure if it's still the case (or if it applies to the UK versions) but numerous US sites report the OEM versions of Vista are either 32 or 64 bit whereas the retail and upgrade contain both. I use a Technet version so haven't tested the regular products.

That's the 3rd difference most ppl forget about or ignore. Mostly because v. few people want both anyway. You either have a system that makes the use of 64bit sensible, or you don't!

Edit* Just found out i cant reinstall with retail cd and OEM key, but can i still use the recovery consol?
