    somethigns wrong with memory

Hi, this is for a friend... something is using up more memory than there is showing in the process list. even with every process turned off, it is always showing as a steady 40% of ram used. I know you wont believe me, so I have taken a screenshot.

I added all these processes' mem usage up on a calculator and i got something like 290MB used (way over-rounding). The gadget at the bottom reports that almost 800MB is being used. Where??

This gadget is not the only tool used to determine that 800MB is being used. Two tabs over in Task Manager (the "Performance" tab) also shows this high level of ram being used. but I couldn't show that in this screenshot. I've also used the memory program in majorgeeks.com to measure it too and it was the same.

I have 2GB of ram here (as shown in the gadgert). Right clicking My Computer also shows 2GB. the majorgeeks.com program also shows 2GB, as well as some other programs like CPUz. So my mem isn't bad.

So what could be causing moar mem usage than is being shown by the processes? This problem has been occurring for a while, and I just installed vista SP1 in hopes of correcting the issue, but it did not work.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

the same happens with me, i think it's just the superfetching.

although, superfetching should only be shown at the bottom under physical memory, if it was shown in the main memory used section it'd constantly be full.

    craig.

Here's the thing, you don't want to. Unlike XP, Vista is designed to make use of all the RAM you have installed. It does this to ensure that your regularly used applications are faster and more responsive. Whilst it *appears* that Vista is less effeciant, it's part of a new way of thinking that basically means unused RAM is being wasted.

    Re: somethigns wrong with memory

Well my vista PC doesn't have high ram usage like this. Only my friend's vista PC.

Plus, he says many times programs will crash and say "out of virtual memory". or his PC will just freeze and he has to reboot,

so there's definitely some sort of problem IMHO
