    VMWare

    Hi,

I'm wanting to get a Windows Server 2003 x64 virtual machine running.

I tried in Virtual PC 2007 today, but that horrible thing only supports 32-bit. I'm not using it out choice, VMWare won't work for me.

I've been trying to get VMWare 2 Beta going, but whenever I setup a virtual machine and click run it gets stuck at 95%.

    I'm on Vista Ultimate x64 SP1

    Craig.

    Re: VMWare

when you installed vmware beta, im assuming you installed it with elevated admin and i dont think it has an approved driver, so assuming you allowed it to install all its own drivers, reboot your pc, hit f8 and start the machine with allowing unsigned drivers and see if that fixes it.

    Re: VMWare

VMWare 2 beta 2 has signed drivers, but I will try that anyway

    Re: VMWare

Are you allocating hard disk space fully for the virtual machine? That can take some time if you have allocated a lot of disk space.

Interestingly I can't get server 2008 x64 to run in it, but x86 is fine

Nah, I don't allocate the disk space.

No disk activity when it's trying to load either

    Re: VMWare

Hmm... what OS are you running as the host? Anything written to the event log?

EDIT - I see you're running Vista x64, so ignore that. I'm running Server 03 x64, so can't compare really but I'd be looking at the event log to be honest, as well as the VMWare Server logs.

    Re: VMWare

As your using Vista, try this.

Move your virtual machines folder away from the root and put it with in you profile c:\users\%username%\virtual machines and then try and start it.

    Re: VMWare

Have you moved the virtual machine folder from wherever it is into your profile if its not already there?

    Re: VMWare

I assume you mean moving it without changing any of the VM settings?

If so, yes. But when I do it just says files not found.

I've tried telling it I've moved them, but it restricts me to the one folder in C:

    Re: VMWare

Operating systems and apps go way over my head so I am the last person to offer advice on the subject. Installing the VMWare 2 Beta certainly didn’t go as smoothly as it should have and stopped running just when it was almost at the end. Had no idea it required an elevated admin, approved driver, and so on. The posts only confused me further and I decided that expert help was the best way to tackle this!
