OK.
I have a laptop atm that is running Vista Home Premium. Its OK but i wasnt to try something new so Linux *appears* to fit the bill.
Can someone recommend me a Linux flavour in 32Bit that should be good for me please
Is it free aswell btw?
kubuntu, debian, etc. are very nice, so is fedora![]()

Another vote for Fedora. I've found its package manger to be very useful - just enter the name of the software you want and it'll find it usually, else there's usually a precombiled version elsewhere.
I'm sure other versions have functionality which is very similar but Fedora's what I know :-)

Ditto, i wonder if someone has hijacked Blitzen's login?
Anyway i wholeheartedly recommend the latest Ubuntu for 1 reason alone : The 'Wubi' installer means that you
1) Boot into Windows
2) Load your Ubuntu disc (or mount the iso image, whichever)
3) Select the install within windows option
4) Follow all onscreen prompts
5) Within half an hour you are booting & playing about in Ubuntu
If you dont like it then
6) Reboot back into Windows
7) Uninstall Ubuntu
And job done, no trace it was ever there. Very very easy and painless.

Ubuntu is probably the easiest Linux OS out there atm
I love Debian and have installed it on my new server.
Ubuntu is based on Debian but a lot easier to use.
You need to decide that UI ya want as well. Gnome or KDE its down to personal taste really I have always gone for KDE

Personally, I have had no problems with Fedora (Core 6 - not upgraded to the later ones yet)
However, Fedorea, Ubuntu and several other distros all have live disk versions so you can try them out without loading anything to the hard drive.

my main complaint about fedora (which applies equally to red hat enterprise) is sloppiness. for example, the default package selection for RHEL5 requires you to insert CD1, CD2, CD3, and CD4 - yet the latter two only for a couple of files each. why are the most common files not on the first disc? that kind of lack of attention to detail is prevalent, in my experience, in most RPM based systems. and in KDE too, as it happens (broken file associations and so on)

KDE isn't relevant to PMS, but I agree, RPM is still rubbish in virtually all regards, even in SuSE, zypp has replaced rpm as the PMS of choice, so while it still uses .rpm style packages, it isn't burdened by the same ugly behavior of the rpm system.

I quite liked OpenSuse for a desktop setup but Ubuntu is much easier to use.
