    Delay for Shortcut in StartUp

My internet connection is set to start with Windows but often fails due to coming up too soon.

Having done a search, I now have a s/c to a batch file that has this:

    @echo off
    ping localhost -n 30 > nul
    "C:\Program Files\Thomson\SpeedTouch USB\STDIALUP.EXE"/Dial /Entry "Speedtouch Connection"

Now, it works OK but the command window comes up for the period of the delay. Is there something that I could add to make it 'silent'?

    Thanks.

Re: Delay for Shortcut in StartUp

You can make it invisible if you call it with WScript.

Thats the only way I truely know how to make it invisible.

There is a minimise command for batch commands, think its /min but you'd need to change the rest of the batch file to use it.

Thanks. This is beyond me - I got the basic part from a site and modified it. Where would the /min go?

    Last part.

Does your modem would with the standard Windows dialup stuff? If it does I'd suggest AutoRasDial which installs as a service and maintains a connection. Although I would first suggest getting a router, they're dirt cheap.

Try Make the shortcut as "start /min /i whatevername.bat"
You don't need to change anything in the bat file with this.

It's a USB ADSL modem (I also have an ADSL2 PCI card, but the USB is faster). Don't really want a router - yet another wall-wart and no real benefit.

Tried it - just get a message saying that the name is incorrect.
Sorry - never was any good with this sort of thing (it's put me off Linux, due to the amount of geeky stuff).

Re: Delay for Shortcut in StartUp

does it have to be USB?

I you can use it with a CAT5 cable and not a USB do it that way.

    try

    ping localhost /silent -n 30 > nul

    or

Create a .bat file with the script you are using, create a shortcut to that .bat file and change its properties to minimised and stick that into your starup directory. It will start minimized.

Interesting choices there, thanks. I like the bit about the risks with an invisible process.

    Yes, USB - it's a frog. I like it because it's small and doesn't need a wallwart.

I'd done the bit with the .bat file and s/c; as for Minimised - missed the bleeding obvious there! - thanks! That's done it nicely.
