Re: vista 64bit or xp 32bit?

I've heard that there are problems with third-party software compatibility with Vista 64-bit. I'm debating whether or not to go 32 or 64-bit, but is there any point with 64-bit if all my third-party software will become redundant?

Re: vista 64bit or xp 32bit?

The majority of software works fine. Its the more unusual things that have issues, like old codecs and custom wrote software that is no longer updated (This is usually more of a Vista issue though, not a 32/64bit one).

In short - if you use anything you consider to be unusual / quote old check first, otherwise you should be ok

Also, are 64-bit binaries actually any quicker than 32-bit? Does anyone have any benchmarks comparing Vista 32 and 64? After all, performance is the key issue here!

I read somewhere that they are actually slower, or that they use more ram. can't remember which.

Look in the Toms hardware article. something about using 8gb of ram

Seems like people are getting mixed results between Vista 32 and 64 at the mo. Not convinced with 64-bit yet personally...

Would be pretty dumb not to include Directx 10 on a newer version of windows don't you think! Guessing Directx 11 would be on the horizon when windows 7 turns up....

Gone from Xp64 to Vista 64 and I like it. Once you've turned all the catching rubbish of (superfetch etc) its works really well, but I too did upgrade my ram from 2gb to 4gb because some stuff was sluggish. Now all well and happy.

But too be honest there isn't any difference between the two that the average joe will notice.

    This.

But if you have no OS then better to get Vista than XP.

I'd have to say if you can get Vista cheap then go for that but I wouldn't pay full price especially with leaked info that Vista maybe displaced in the next couple of years with Winodws 7.
