Authenticating to Server 2003 - weird problem

I run a small network at home and have set up a domain on a windows 2003 server so I can mess around etc but I have a weird problem.

I can connect to the domain fine on the client machines but if I try to access any of the shares then it asks for a username and password as it cant log me on to them with my existing account. If I try to use the same username and pass it states it cant log me on as it cant find the domain controller to authenticate me

I know I am connected to it fine as I log on to it on the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen at startup and it shows the correct account in the start menu (name at the top) which I didnt put in i.e. it pulls it from the server.

If I use the administrator account then its fine

    Any ideas ??

Have you created user accounts on the domain controller rather than locally and then
joined the machines in your network to the internal domain???

Me thinks you are only about half way through the job.

I created the accounts on the domain controller then I reinstalled XP on the client machine as I planned to. Joined the domain as normal and thats as far as I have got. The clients show in the computers section of the domain controller MMC

When you go to login, if an XP machine is correctly joined to the domain, the advanced segment of the login box will have a drop down domain list.

Im assuming you are logging into the domain account??

    Yeah doing that

I tried something that seems to have fixed it but no idea how

I removed the machine from the domain (from the client end) then rebooted. Readded the machine to the domain (again from the client end) and it now works fine

No idea what I did wrong to begin with or right to end with that fixed it tho... All permissions were fine (accout is member of all local Admins as well as domain admin which I know is overkill i.e. Domain Admins have local admin rights anyways) but there we go

    Thanks for helping tho

We use Windows 2003 SBS at work, and there is a "connect computer to domain" webpage that the server hosts. I dont know if its the same in Windows 2003 Server, but try http://server-name/connectcomputer

Ok, it appears the problem is still there altho its intermittent . Here's a couple of examples to see if anyone has any ideas on the problem -

Burning a DVD with Nero. It is set up to cache all the files from the server before burning but at various times throughout the caching, it fails. If I try to then access any server sahres it says it cannot connect and asks me to authenticate. The only acount I can get on with is the Administrator one but this solves itself when I reboot i.e. I can then access them with my own account

Copying files - I try to copy the files to the local machine and then burn with Nero but I get the same problem as above when its in the middle of a simple file copy

Both times I get an error ending in "... The network resource no longer exists"

Now here is an interesting thing regarding the Nero problem. I restarted both the server and the client. When they both booted up I started nothing else but Nero and it worked perfectly (caching files and burning)

I have no idea whats going on

I DO have Norton Internet Security installed so wondering if this might cause a problem ??

AFAIK I have joined the domain properly as it authenticates me fine when I log in. THis is what I did to join the domain -

    1. installed windows XP
    2. set the drivers up for the onboard ethernet
    3. right clicked "my computer" and went to the section that allows you to change workgroups etc.
    4. Told it the domain to join and hit OK
    5. the dialog box asking for a username/pass came up so I give it a "domain admin" username and pass that has permissions to join it to the domain
    6. domain is joined and I reboot.

Am I missing a step or something cause its peeing me right off

I know I could just run it as a Workgroup setup but I wanted to try the Domain for experience etc.
