Backup everything essential and reformat... Be careful when backing up too, try not to back up the virus too

Its the only way you can be certain the virus is gone...

Alternatively, you could try running Avast/AVG/an online virus scanner to make sure you pc is clean...

    have a look here

Red circle with white cross in taskbar tray - saying 'Your computer is infected'

I tink VundoFix.exe, combofix or even windows defender kills it.

    not false. nor from microsoft

the pc's buggered. back up critical files (and virus scan the media with a real scanner, not the wastes of space you mention), and reformat

preferably with something that isn't xp, if your associate is able to get his machine so thoroughly infected so easily

So great, they've allowed your PC to become completely infected?

    backup, then try this..

    disable system restore
    install, update & run...

    ccleaner slim
    nod32 trial
    spybot s&d
    adaware se
    avg antispyware (remove this after)

then do start, run "sfc /scannow" and get your windows disc ready

    failing that, format

When my dads mate brought his laptop over he was using windows anti virus so then i installed pctools and removed some infections. so i dont think i should blame pc tools they always do a great job i ask my dads mate if he would like to re-install windows because thats the only good option left.

Re: false alarms by microsoft about virus

The point is that it has only removed some of the viruses! The machine is still infected. No AV detector has a 100% success rate - apart from the quality of the detection engine, a lot depends on how up to date the virus data files are.

The consensus from other Hexus users is that nod32 and Kapersky are pretty good. You could also try the online checker by trend. With a machine as heavily infected as you imply, using at least two tools would be prudent.

Otherwise copy off user data files (and scan those) then reformat the disk and reinstall the OS and applications, as others have suggested.
