Quite small really .. Wonder if it's any good..
Looks like it is actually out now
I'll be downloading tonight for my other PC (Vista on main though)
It's tiny.
Install process was as follows for my comp:
-'Preparing to download': ~4 minutes
-'Downloading': 10 minutes of doing nothing, presumably queuing on a server but no messages to that effect. Then suddenly my net connection burst into life and the whole thing downloaded in what seemed to be seconds.
-'Verifying download': ~1 minute.
-'Installing': ~7 minutes.
Then reboot and a couple of DOS screens for scripts which occur too quickly for me to catch.
Completely painless so far. Much better than SP2 install!
And no difference to anything I've noticed. I did some 3dmark06 runs before and after just to prove the fact (I know you wouldn't expect to see a difference here anyway).
Before
5582
SM2: 2191
SM3: 2413
CPU: 1908
After
5583
SM2: 2190
SM3: 2412
CPU: 1913
Pretty consistent benchmark though![]()
That's what I mean - with an up to date XP install then it really is tiny. I have the feeling my download was even less than 70mb because it went by so fast, but VM might have been kind to me.
I've now noticed bootup and shut down is a bit quicker - the order of bootup seems a bit different - the windows loading screen only occurs quite briefly now, then I get a delay while my optical drives spin up, and I'm into windows. Comptuers without drives spinning up will probably boot very quickly.
Start menu's don't seem to be loaded in advance now - the programs menu pops up very quickly but sub menus display a grey box for a second while the data is read off the hard disk and cached - second time opening is instant of course. Maybe this was the case before, but it was something I only noticed since the install.

Most of the patches are already installed on 90% of systems, so it will be comparatively tiny, just like Vista SP1. It is essentially a roll-up.
The main download incorporates both SP1 and SP2, so naturally it is rather a lot bigger. Supposedly you need SP1 or SP2 installed, but it was fine on a naked install when I was testing here. No problems to report - though it appears they've finally fixed the network drives issue where fixed drives and network drives would be assigned the same letter automatically.
I've been running it for a week or 2 now, and it's totally transparent. There are no visual differences I've stumbled upon.
I've been building a VM image for rollout here over the past few days - that's how little it's changed - it's already going to be deployed.
I guess it depends what you're downloading it for. I keep existing installs reasonably up to date (manually, not using update), but I'm forever installing test systems. For that, I want a slipstream disc built to the level I'm currently testing at. And for that, I need the full SP, not just the bits that Update determines are needed by a given machine - which, obviously, will be variable and depend on how up to date a user has kept his install.
Just downloaded the ~560MB version, installed it and, so far, going OK.
As has been said, nothing obvious but most apps. seem to open a second or 2 faster.
Fingers crossed.

I downloaded the full version back during the first release (before it was pulled for whatever the problem was). I've experienced no problems at all, and unless its just my eyes playing tricks, XP does seem to run ever-so-slightly quicker now, mainly in games (I might have an extra frame or two now...). Other than that, no difference, really...
There seems to be an issue with some OEM images as installed at the factory and AMD processors.
It's due to the OEM loading a driver that's not needed by AMD; SP3 (and SP2) cause crashes.
It's discussed, and work-around given, here:

Work around doesn't always work either as I found out this weekend, got a few mates with compaq OEM's with sempron chips, only 2 of the 5 worked after the fix mentioned in that blog. The others are back on sp2 and remaining there for the time being![]()
