    Definition of an intranet

Can someone help me clarify a few things about intranets?
I have a report to write where I have to make recomendations about implementing "New Media Solutions" for a company who are basically trying to redevelop their intranet. My main problem is that Im struggling to see where the new media comes into it, as its a company intranet, its mostly going to be dynamic content management sytem stuff, which is all good and well, but saying they need to build a dynamic content system is not much of a reccomendation.

The company in question has various offices dotted about the region it works in, so I was wondering what exactly qualifies as intranet? If something is available online (ie hosted on a web server) but private, only accessible to employees of the company, is it still an intranet or does intranet specifically imply physically networked computers?
Sorry if this is a bit of an odd question, but Im a bit confused on the whole subject.
    Thanks

Intranet technically means the closes internal network, rather than an interconnection of several networks.

However there are now things such as virtual private networks, which fake a closed network over the internet.

I would personally advise that if a service is only available to employees of the company, and it probably does effectively count as being under your remit.

My Company intranet is also internet facing , but I think thats different to an extranet , which is a proportion of your network that you would present to a group of outsiders ( but publicly , such as customers )

Intranet to me would not be online but private. Intranet would be a web server on an internal class subnet, 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x

    Re: Definition of an intranet

Rosaline is technically correct, so an intranet could be defined as a collection of networked computers where you could physically follow a connection medium from one machine to another - and example would be ten base2 ethernet where a coax cable looped from one machine to another. Replace that wiith a layer2 device like a switch and the same philosophy applies.

But then it gets more complex, because if you change the switch for a layer 3 device (router) you are introducing the possibility of a different subnet - so you have two networks, physcially connected - so it is a private internet - or an intranet! Now you could define an intranet as a private network of networks.

VPN is another dimension, but in that case the publiv internet is only used as a transmission medium. The client host gets its IP address from a DHCP server at the other end of the VPN pipe, so the data is tunneklled through the public 'pipe'.

So my stab would be something like "An intranet is a network of networks, logically connected, where acess is only granted to a known and defined set of people - the company employees"

That doesn't preclude an Intranet from having a public face to the internet, but acess to the intranet would be limited to a specific service (a webserver, or mailserver) not the whole intranet.

That isn't a watertight definition - but might do for ytyour purposes.
