    Question How do you fold yours?

    How are you cranking up yer PPD?

    I've recently switched to running 2x SMP clients and the affinity changer to make the most of the single quad-core CPU. After some installation issues I finally got it running and all seems to be well.
    Occasionally I'll pop my home PC on but now the temps have gone up it'll be off for some time as the case has limited cooling.

    However I've been wondering if I can't do better with what I have.
    Why is it that the largest units I've ever had yield 2144 points whereas I've seen others with 3k+ and even 5k point units?
    Do I need to change my settings or does the system realise my CPU simply cannot cope?

    What advice can you give?

    I'll see if I can spawn a second process !

    why would 2 x 2 core SMP be better than 1 quad core then? I thought quads were best on SMP as their churn through is so good.

    Re: How do you fold yours?

    This is only for quad-core CPU's!

    As I understand it the SMP client happily understand dual-core CPU's but is non-the-wiser regarding quad's.
    To make the most of a quad you can run 2 clients BUT the affinty the fah processes needs to be monitored to correctly assign them to the cores. At least that's the gist as I understand it!

    There is quite a heated debate regarding the use of two clients as although it bumps up the overall PPD from a quad, it extends the time taken to return a single unit.

    As I am still returning the work units well within their deadlines I am happy to carry on like I am. However if I start getting too close I will revert back to one as PPD should really come second to actually completing the projects!

    So if you want to run 2x SMP in a single Windows instance you'll need the Fah SMP Affinity Changer running at the same time.
    Details can be found here.
    The client needs to be v5.91. I don't know if it'll run with 5.92.

    The basics are:

    1. Install Affinity Changer
    2. Install two instances of F@h 5.91 to separate folders
    3. Run the lot!

    If you already have one instance installed

    When I used the Windows exe installer I got an error when installing a second instance. However some files were installed to the new directory I requested.
    I then copied across my config file from the initial install and edited it to increment the CPU id by one.
    When I triggered the second copy it started just like the first and both are now running happily alongside each other.

    I am using Fahmon to monitor my processes and keep track of the deadlines etc.

    Hope that helps!

    Re: How do you fold yours?

    OK but I have found that running SMP on just two cores slows it massively. More than a half on my system, hence my confusion.

    I have, however, found that 3 cores runs nearly as fast as 4!

    So three on my PC and one for gaming a lot of the time.

    You're spot-on.
    This is not for everyone.

    I'm running this on my workstation that never uses games. I need the CPU power rarely so I'm safe operating as I do and I reckon the fact I'm using a Xeon means it's coping extremely well.

    Running one SMP instance I was processing one unit every 18hrs.
    Running two SMP instances I am processing two units every 29hrs.

    Thing is that's a generalisation as when I'm working both numbers are extended depending on the level processing I'm doing.

    A note about RAM.
    Each of the four FahCore instances seems to demand a slightly different amount of RAM and VM.
    In my case:

    Instance 1 RAM: 55Mb; 55Mb; 61Mb; 70Mb;
    Instance 2 RAM: 54Mb; 54Mb; 61Mb; 70Mb;
    Instance 1 VM: 63Mb; 63Mb; 69Mb; 80Mb;
    Instance 2 VM: 62Mb; 62Mb; 69Mb; 80Mb;
    fahmon RAM: 7Mb
    fahmon VM: 5Mb
    Affinity Changer RAM: 11Mb
    Affinity Changer VM: 13Mb

    I guess the point here is that F@h keeps your RAM busy so be aware when trying to run games and other apps. If you run 2x SMP expect to have your performance impaired!
