Associating WMV to Media Player Classic (Vista)

For some reason, Vista just won't me associate WMV to Media Player Classic. I've tried to right click -> Open With, check the file property and select Change, I just can't get Media Player Classic to appear under the list of 'Recommended Programs' or 'Other Programs' after I point it mplayerc.exe. To make things worse, Vista had no issue with allowing to associate WMV files with WinRaR and I can't find the option to remove WinRaR from the list of Recommended Programs.

Edit: Okay, I've managed to dissociate WinRaR from WMV by removing an entry in the registry. But I am still puzzled as to why MPC can't be associated with WMV. Technically, it is in the OpenWithList in the registry. But there is a key under OpenWithProgids called WMP11.AssocFile.WMV, and I am wondering if that has anything to do with the persistent file association hijack.

Re: Associating WMV to Media Player Classic (Vista)

Just tried it (had to find and download a WMV first).

Open With - browse to MPC's exe (in Real Alternative's directory) and the file opened in MPC; MPC is now in the list of files.
BTW, WMV also plays in IrfanView.

I have WMP 9 on XP Pro SP3 (did try to leave out WMP when slipstreaming the disc but nLite left it in), so WMP 11 might be different.

Worth backing up your Reg and deleting that key?

Thanks. I never had a problem with XP in this regard, so I am wondering if it's not Vista related.

TakTak! - I didn't even think of suggesting that, as it's the obvious thing to do.

I am afraid not. I'll try a reboot later and report back.

Re: Associating WMV to Media Player Classic (Vista)

Actually, I didn't have to reboot when I removed the WinRaR association from the registry to take effect. You can do more changes without reboot these days - I remember having to reboot just to change colour depth.

Anyway, I did the reboot, and the issue is still there. I'll probably leave this alone for the time being, I need to focus on other things and the last thing I need is to break my OS just to save time on opening wmv file I shouldn't have time for

Still, could anyone confirm that they have no problem associating wmv with MPC under Vista with WMP 11 installed? Cheers.

Re: Associating WMV to Media Player Classic (Vista)

I had the same problem: (Vista Home Premium btw)
I couldn't associate any file to media player classic.
It all started when I lost audio in MPC.
I uninstalled the k-lite codec pack and reinstalled it.
    Still no audio.
So then I downloaded MPC and put it in
C:\Program Files\, opened it and then opened a file and it worked.
    So I went to C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Media Player Classic\
and opened that one - no sound.
I deleted that one and moved the other one ( that worked ) into the same directory
and guess what ?! No sound.
I moved it back to C:\Program Files\ and it worked.
I tried to reestablish the file associations by right clicking on the file
and blah-blah-blah. Just like TooNice, it wouldn't work.
So I opened MPC and set all the associations from there and it worked.
    Yes the WMVs too.
But what difference would which directory MPC resides in make ???? Weird.

Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types->WMV in the list->Advanced->Edit or Create Action->Browse to dir and choose associated app.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
