    Re: memtest86 and memtest86+

memtest86+ was forked from memtest86, which had seemingly died. however, both are now actively maintained.

    Re: memtest86 and memtest86+

I've had problems with memtest86 starting, memtest86+ on the other hand ran fine.

I'd use + myself, if i had a motherboard which had problems (ie couldn't even get to running the test), then id try the other.

Memtest 86+ seems to be4 more comprensive and supports a greater number of mobo/processor combinations.

    Re: memtest86 and memtest86+

Dont use Memtest 86, its very outdated and wont work with most newer chipsets. Memtest 86+ is the only one that should be used now.

memtest86 3.4 should have similar hardware support to memtest86+ 1.70

Ahh cheers for the clear up. I was having visions of a spyware/virus infested version.

    Paranoia...?? Perhaps.

Yup, and at the same time I've had issues with Memtest86+ with older chipsets.

    86+ = Newer machines / 86 = legacy, generally speaking

frankly, if anyone's writing spyware in assembly, then fair play to them

    Re: memtest86 and memtest86+

that would be a lot of them then..... (can't link to any of those places from work, probably wouldn't be a good idea, but if your genuinely intrested i can nock you a PM with some links to the suprisingly commercial world of spyware and blackhattery).

my point is, the human eye validating if something is spyware or not is time consuming, and requires an immense amount of skill.

simply looking at what APIs are used in an OS running app can often be far quicker at giving clues (which is something many virus scanners do, under the banner of hurisitcs)

    Re: memtest86 and memtest86+

Oh no, I wasn't wanting to check the actual files themselves. Just had a thought, perhaps it's a dodgy site with a dodgy version of memtest. Having two similar sites for the (almost) same product had me scratching my head wondering which one was real.

Anyhow, thanks for the clear up
