    Video/Audio editing software

In the past I used Vegas Video (think it's now Sony Vegas) and that was a neat video/audio creation tool.

This was on a friend's PC (he also had CineMax3D or something to that effect), so now I am looking for something equally similar but is either cheap or free. Would be great if it could handle decoding of divx, xvid and h264 as well as encoding in those formats (I'm not pedantic enough to want raw files of anything).

The purpose is to make simple videos to some music for fun. Send them to a few mates etc.

I liked Vegas Video as it had alot of presets (transitions, fading, multiple video and audio channels) that made life easy for some funky videos.

I'm not too keen on Windows Movie Maker so any other is most welcome.

I looked at Sony Vegas and I am unsure as to what Sony Movie Studio offers but I do know Sony Vegas Pro has elements that I would like but is over £400!!!

VirtualDub (free). Ulead VideoStudio (cheap at ~£40) if you want a slightly more gimmicky GUI but with more flexibility regarding editing, adding overlays, etc. It's more GUI driven than VirtualDub, but less powerful.

//edit: seems Ulead have been taken over by Corel. I hope it doesn't go the same way that Paint Shop Pro did.

    Re: Video/Audio editing software

also, here's a special deal on the full package of Vegas, not academic or upgrade or limited in any way, from the most reputable dealer of electronics / cameras etc in the US:

    US$129

    B&H Photo Video

It does not contain DVD Architect but for someone who bought Movie Studio and wanted the Vegas Pro functions, it's a great deal.
