Apart from DirectX gaming what other use does Vista have over Linux?

I just can't see what Vista can do that Linux can't?

I use Vista Home Premium on my laptop and apart from Gaming and maybe the Media Center I can't see any need to use any Microsoft Products at home

On my desktop I have Ubuntu 8.04, gnome desktop with Compz, OpenOffice, Gimp, Firefox 3 etc etc

It all runs on an old 3500+ with 1GB Ram and a FX5200 AGP graphics card. It looks better than Vista, it runs smoother than Vista on older hardware and it just feels a lot more responsive.

Ontop of this, Compiz makes Vista look old, really old!

Now to me its a no brainer but apart from myslef I don't know anyone else who uses Linux at home for a desktop OS.

Run windows software/drivers. And that's about it really.

If you don't need/want it then don't use it. Simple really

In my case the only difference is that on Vista my X-Fi more or less works.

I play games, so I've gotta use a Windows OS' because thats what developers focus on still.

I've got 8.04 installed on both my machines, along with Windows - but I still find myself using Windows more, probably because I use it at work etc aswell.

creative went from the best-supported and most recommended vendor with the live! and audigy series... to garbage with the x-fi. their closed-source linux drivers don't even work. a semi-intentional side effect of the ever-changing shape of the kernel internals is that making a closed source driver is a MONUMENTAL effort requiring expert programmers, whereas using the open-source groundwork already laid is much much cheaper and easier (since other people will update your driver for free if changes are forced by kernel changes). it also guarantees out-of-the-box support for your kit.

but... it means revealing your OMGSECRET hardware details, to the extent that secret chinese chip factories could crank out pirate CPUs compatible with your drivers. it's bankrupted linux-friendly companies like intel or lsi or adaptec, after all

kidzer and dangel have both hit the nail on the head though

that said, i tried the demo for the new penny arcade episodic rpg thing at work, and it just worked on linux - extract from .tgz and run

I have many OS's setup with VM and I have to say I think Ubuntu, when setup correctly, is the best OS ever made.

Its even fantastic in a Business network.

With saying that, 2008 Server is also looking pretty good as well. I will be shelling out £3,000 for 2008 next week though! and there is the biggest difference.

price isn't really the biggest factor though - RHEL will set you back a fair bit if you want enterprise support.

it's more about the freedom - the ability to pick anything you don't like, even at the lowest levels, and change it to better suit your needs. you can do things YOUR way, not a single software vendor's way

yes, its so flexible it is only really limited by your ability... I am no Linux wiz to be honest.

I have bought RedHat to run a Linux mail server it was about £1,500 I think. I ended up runnning Scalix: Linux Email, Calendaring and Messaging Platform it was very good but a real pain to setup without a GUI.

Re: Apart from DirectX gaming what other use does Vista have over Linux?

I still regard my self as linux noob - the thing(s) I like are...

No complex registry hive to get to groips with - at least a script driven system is relatively easy to undersatnd

The fact that an application cn usually be debugged without recourse to the blamket "re-install"

The logging facilities are very comprehensive and easy to get at

    Reporting and monitoring

I can run several virtyual consoles as well as a gui console, and then run terminal apps from within a gui - as admin without having to log out and back in again

    SSH

Great for experimenting with realtively heavyweight server applications (Free Radius, Postfix, Apache... etc)

    and...
    It just works!

What I don't like - poor support for winmodems on laptops (lack of vendor support)

Hit and miss Wireless support - getting better, but you need to choose hardware carefully.

    Sometimes sparse and cryptic documentation.

Wine won't run Perfect Office (Open office is good, but not as good as Wordperfect X3) If only Corel hadn't abandoned WordPerfect for Linux...
