    Memory Testing

I've had this box sat at my parents for about 2 years now, after it started becoming very unstable. So with a fresh hard drive i started to install ubuntu on it, but some of the icons (fwd) where corrupt.

Is anyone aware of a simple app, that can sit in as a boot loader, which does a very simple memory test of all the RAM? This memory was so damaged it was obvious from the first second of memtest86+ that it was nakard.

I'm not talking about an exhustive testing, just a 0x00 and a 0xFF would suffice.

(also any ideas on why one stick of RAM would suddenly die?)

    Re: Memory Testing

i'm confused - surely memtest86+ is what you want? run it from the boot loader, let it test your RAM?

    Re: Memory Testing

ah sorry i forgot to explain!

when re-seating the RAM, it worked fine. Go figure!

Now whilst this isn't a well specced box, it should do fine for some things. It would be nice to know if the memory problem will come back.

So all i want is a simple write 0x00 to all memory, verify, then 0xFF to all memory verify. If that fails halt. If not load bootloader. Every time PC starts.

    Re: Memory Testing

so... a POST memory test, as a chain-loading bootloader?
