    Help! Philips Laptop Recovery Disc

    Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had a spare recovery disc for a Philips laptop (X59) running Vista Home Premium? I've tried a recovery disc from an HP laptop, but no dice...Grrr.

If any of you can help, I'll even pay postage and supply a blank CD/DVD for the burn! Any help would be much appreciated! PM me if you need to!

    Cheers,

    s75

Have you contacted Philips? They should be able to supply the correct recovery media for you, though will doubtless charge you.

Apparently it's not supported directly by Philips, it's a Dixons Group jobby.

Ah joy... In that case: substitute the word "Philips" for "DSG"

Thanks chaps - yeah, got the laptop from Currys, 'support' from The Tech Guys involves a £35 charge for the recovery disc.

Is a recovery disc an absolute necessity?

Only... if you're confident at installing Vista yourself... just get someone you know who uses Vista Home Premium to burn you a copy.
It's perfectly legal to use a copy, as long as you have your own licence key

Unfortunately AFAIK it's illegal to make a copy of the disc..... Though by the terms of the license, you can borrow someone else's disc and reinstall it BUT it might not work, because it might be a branded volume license key.

Not sure about anyone else, but my Vista DVD states rather explicitly "Do not sell, lend, transfer or make illegal copies of this disc."

    Seems clear to me.

Did the laptop not come with some sort of recovery method? A lot of OEMs use a hidden recovery partition on the hard disk, and have some form of app to burn this to disc.

    Its not illegal.
Its only illegal if you break protection on the disk. A retail OS disk has no such protection.

You are permitted by law to make a backup of PC software in the UK under Section 50(A) of the 1988 Copyright Designs and Patents Act.

    Linkage

Click to open 50A. Back up copies.
    50A.
    Back up copies.
    — (1) It is not an infringement of copyright for a lawful user of a copy of a computer program to make any back up copy of it which it is necessary for him to have for the purposes of his lawful use
Thats before we even get into issues like Slipstreaming - which are supported by MS

If you own a licence to use the software (The COA / Key) you can legally use a copy of the orignal (it must be an exact copy of the orignal though) for the purpose of using the software legally.

An "illegal copy" would be lending it to your mate to install, when he has no licence to use the software. Its a standard statement on all MS disks (Thats ignoring the activation issue for a second).

I *can* see your point, but... in what way is him borrowing the disc from a mate not covered by the word "lend"? Or even downloading a copy off P2P, only to be used if you already have the license? Your link (well I'll be honest - I didn't follow the link, and I'm trusting that you quoted in context etc) states...

I'm not saying you're wrong (well, other than about the term "lend" ), and I'm certainly not a lawyer but I personally feel that this implies that the owner of the disc can make legal backup copies *for his own personal use* (ie not to lend, which would be against the labelling on the disc).

The OP clearly has a license for the OS, this much I am not disputing. He *should* have been provided with a means to recover that OS in the event of disaster, be that through a recovery partition, recovery media or a Vista DVD unless this was made clear at point of sale (ie the machine was sold as open box, missing parts etc etc). What happens the next time scorchio75 needs to recover his machine? Should he have to keep borrowing the disc off his mate (regardless of whether this is legal or not) or should he be using what should have been provided in the first instance?

I'd be interested to know the reasons for the reinstall - it may be possible to still create the recovery media (if indeed it is on a hidden partition) if this is planning for the future. If however the OS is crying in a corner... then we have an issue.

Re: Help! Philips Laptop Recovery Disc

Thanks chaps! The laptop and OS are completely kosher, but I was installing some accounting software (also kosher, but dreadfully dull) when things went a little screwy. I'll post in-depth details of what went wrong with the X59 when I have more time tomorrow - although I just can't believe there wasn't a recovery disc in with the laptop...or if there was, then I've lost it.

@ Splash: Yes, Vista isn't just crying in the corner, it's wet itself and wants its mama.

Re: Help! Philips Laptop Recovery Disc

Hokay, research done and all references to the x59 (and I presume it's camp brethren the X59P) suggest that recovery is indeed from a hidden partition, and that there are instructions in the manual to recover it without recovery discs. One source suggested it might involve f9 on boot, but as I can't verify that and I don't have a copy of the manual I can't confirm it.

Don't suppose you have the manual to hand do you?

It's stupid (IMO), but many laptop manufacturers still insist on putting the recovery files on a partition (only), then neglect to tell the buyer (in documentation) that they should copy said recovery files to a CD/DVD ASAP

If they don't, and the HDD fails (the reason why I think it's stupid to put them on a partition), or you delete the partition - without knowing the consequences, then you're snookered

It wouldn't be so important if the supplier provided a recovery disc as well, but relying on the buyer to create one, +/or relying on the HDD not failing, is just asking for trouble

Re: Help! Philips Laptop Recovery Disc

It's a sorry state of affairs, but true. That said, based on the reading around I've done this particular model should have had a nag screen telling you to create recovery media on each bootup until they'd been made (that said, I'd imagine that there might be a checkbox to stop this happening), so it's hardly as if the OEM weren't making anyone aware of this.

That said, a random search ot TheTechGuys (maaaaan I hate that name) I found this - perhaps worth a shot (as far as I know the only difference between the x59 and the x59P is that the P is a little more comfortable with it's sexuality.)? If that works you can then burn the recovery media and everyone's a happy bunny
