    XP...or Vista

    Right.

Im currently running XP Pro on both my PC and Laptop.

I am however in the process of buying and setting up a whole new build. And im wondering which will be best.

    Vista or XP.

Is Vista worth the extra hassle?

There's no more "extra hassle" with Vista than there is with XP.

    Re: XP...or Vista

I'm bought Vista Home Premium 64 bit yesterday, so far no problems and I'm happy with it.

The real test is tonight though when I install all my apps.

    Wink Re: XP...or Vista

I was as loathe as anybody to make the switch from XP to Vista (I still use XP on my main gaming rig).
But my new laptop (17" Dell XPS M1730) came with Vista Home Premium (32bit) on it, and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to find my way around, and all my games are working fine as well

    Re: XP...or Vista

vista doesn't take too much to get use to. but you do definitely need to switch some of the things off.... UAC is so annoying! but overall its pretty good. also get 64bit so you can use 4+gb fully. i had 2gb of ram before and the step up to 4gb makes alot of difference in terms of it being smoother

    Re: XP...or Vista

From my recent experiences in this section of the forum, I have to say most people here are bias towards Vista. I however am not!

I bought XP x64 this week and got to say so far I've found it to be simple, quick and lets me do what I wanna do without nagging!

It has only been installed for a few hours so early days yet.

Have to get Vista as well because I am meant to be leaning it for work purposes and to upgrade my MS certs. I am grateful for virtual machines.

Do *not* turn off UAC, search the forum for reasons why, this issue has been fleshed out so many times.

    Re: XP...or Vista

Weaker systems with older hardware will benefit from XP or 32Bit Vista.

Anything with a bit of oomph the has newer hardware runs 64Bit Vista just fine

    Re: XP...or Vista

Which version of Vista should i get? Il definately go 64bit, for reasons mentioned above. I got to mess around on a friends new laptop yesterday whilst sorting their Wireless router out, and it seems ok.

I see all these OEM ones, so what is the difference between OEM and Retail when it comes to O/S? And should i buy OEM?

Scan have Vista Home Premium OEM for £62.62, and Ultimate OEM for £112.79.

OEM is tied to the one machine.

    Re: XP...or Vista

With the retail version you can change your hardware and reactivate with no worries. Whereas with the OEM version, if you change your mobo, you need to purchase another license key.

Correct me if that's wrong please. Ooh and Vista is no worse/better than XP providing you show it plenty of ram.

    Re: XP...or Vista

Putting on vista on an old box is pointless. On a shiny new PC go for it. Don't forget to get 64bit if you want 4GB RAM(highly recommend and cheap as you like).

I run 64bit home premium on the machine in "my system" love it, took me a couple of days to get used to, but I wouldn't go back now.

    Re: XP...or Vista

Buying vista business or ultimate gives you additional rights to *downgrade* back to XP Pro!

Also Retail box is the way to go.... OEM has it's drawbacks....(ie if you run into trouble with the install you can't call Microsoft for help !!!!) - retail box product gives you at least 2 support incidents should you need them.
