Tranferring Details

Ok guys i have just built a new computer for my neighbour after his(and previously my) old athlon XP died. I was hoping that i would be able to boot up with the exsisting windows installation in safe mode and back up outlook and a few other things before rebuilding properly however the computer just restarts.

I can easily acces the hard drive for any other documents by just setting it up as a non-boot drive but can anyone else think of anyway of backing up the outlook details such as e-mail account logins and contacts without actually booting the installation?

depending on what version of outlook it is (outlook express, vs the one that comes with office) you can grab the .pst or .dbx files and import them back in on the fresh install for emails...

Just search for *.pst or *.dbx (pst is Outlook, dbx is Outlook Express).



not sure about login stuff... and hopefully the contacts will be stored along with the emails, if not search for *.wab (windows address book) and import them.

Cheers thats a good start but unfortuantely the login stuff is the most important

From memory, the login details aren't stored in the *.pst file, just the mail/contacts/calendar etc.

Also, you wouldn't be able to get a saved password out of his current setup without a lot of hassle anyway, but surely you can get his user/pass from the ISP or who ever is hosting his mail server?

yeah but i think thats the hassle he wants too avoid tbh

There is a way of backing the entire outlook profile when the installation is booted up but i really cant get anything out of the damn old machine

If i boot from the windows disk and do a windows repair will i lose the outlook details or any of the other install files?
