    Wmp + Hd Dvd?

    hey guys,
Just bought the xbox hd dvd drive from gamestation ... I know that the drive is supported in vista but I'm assuming i still need to buy a program for the hd dvd codec? (Unless anyones knows of a free one )... But once i have the codec i want to know can Windows Media Player playback the films. The reason i want to know is that to my knowledge i cant use my media center remote with power dvd etc... but i can with windows media player so if it can play in there i wont have to get up to use the mouse... any ideas...

Can't use WMP. Need to use PowerDVD or another supported player. Also need HDCP on graphics card and monitor/screen. Or you can purchase Anydvd....

    Re: Wmp + Hd Dvd?

There are free/open source H.264 codecs, but nothing that will handle the DRM or the interface (menus, interactive content etc.) other that commercial apps.

Oh, and I don't believe a fully trusted path is required at the moment (HDCP graphics and monitor). As far as I know, no HD-DVD titles implimented that feature, and I don't think any BluRay disks have either.

    Re: Wmp + Hd Dvd?

Most HD-DVDs are encoded to VC-1 not h.264. Ffdshow and WMP11 have support for VC-1, as does Media Player Classic Home Cinema (which also supports DXVA on some cards). I find that my HTPC can decode h.264 no problem in software, but struggles with VC-1 even though it's less processor intensive.

You'd need to be able to play the .evo files either from the disk (and they're usually split into 2 parts) or from an HDD - AnyDVD HD would decrypt the content. Haali Media Splitter will allow Playback from .evo files, but then you need to get codecs to decode the audio. Dolby Digital Plus is standard on HD-DVD and the only deocders for it at present are the very expensive Sonic decoders. There are none for TrueHD, and any DTS-HD tracks will probably play the DTS core that's embedded in all of them.

There's 1 HD-DVD I know of, released in Germany that uses ICT - the Image Contraint Token that will downgrade the video to 480p for a non protected path.

In short, unless you want to mess about with a lot of codecs, PowerDVD or the Arcsoft player is the easist method. PowerDVD does support remotes as far as I know.

Arcsoft Total Theatre beaks mkv files though (just a warning) as it reports to windows it's capable of decoding them - which is *half* true as it will pull out the video but you'll be stuck with 2 channel sound (instead of 5.1) which really sucks.
It's currently annoying the heck out of me on my HTPC as i'd much rather ffdshow did the work (with ac3filter) as that works perfectly. Annoying bug this as really arcsoft integrates so much better with VMC (and cyberstink doesn't like HDDVD any more).

There are a few h.264 titles - Anchorman, Transformers, Equilibrium, The Machinist, Band of Brothers (last 3 are Japanese disks), but most are VC-1, which is a real pain, as I'd love to skip using PDVD if possible.

The High Def Digest review had the ICT info - it was one of the Resident Evil films, Constantin film was the company I think.

It's not harmed mkv files for me on the main PC & my HTPC, but I use XP not any form of media centre. The 2.0 thing might be fixed by the latest update, can't remember the revision number, but there have now been 2 patches since release.

As for PDVD, 7.3 (3319a is considered the best revision) and 8.x can live happily on the same PC with no problems. You can use 7.3 for HD-DVD, and 8.x for BD. There is a hack for 8.x to allow HD-DVD playback, but the latest 8.x patch breaks the hack, reportedly.

Are you using multichannel sound ok then? TBH I just want it NOT to touch mkv.

Just daft though isn't it? Do I have to buy pdvd twice now to get HDDVD support?

I do prefer arcsoft as it's VMC integration is pretty slick. I'll check for updates but i think i'm using the latest version

Yeah, works fine for me on my HTPC, but it's connected up via analogue so I can get full bitrate from TrueHD/DTS-HD (MA)/LPCM.

You can always get hold of tsmuxer (freeware) which can mux your mkv files to .ts or .m2ts, over even to blu-ray structure. That might fix the issue.

I'm connected via optical straight to the reciever. ATM i'm thinking of writing a small app to rejig the filter priorities (effectively switching out arcsoft) from VMC.
