    Vista x64 and refresh rates..

    Hi,

I'm stuck with a CRT monitor, is there anyway to hack the default display drivers/the OS (no OEM ones available) to force 85hz refresh rates in games, so far all the refresh forcers I've tried havn't worked...

    - Refreshforce
    - refreshlock
    - multires
    - powerstrip
    - riva tuner

If I get this right you dont have the options to puch 85Hz. That would be the driver for your graphics card. See if you can update it to the latest version or one with Vista x64 support. It might also depend on your resolution, with a CRT you can at least lower that a tad and see if you can get 85Hz as an option!

I've got one CRT and one flat screen, the picture quality on the CRT is still pretty damn good! don't be ashamed!

Thanks for that however on the windows desktop I have the 85hz option and in certain games like World of Warcraft there is the option to choose refresh rates inside the game - this works for those games (85hz) but some games don't have this option so they run at 60hz and refreshforcer software does not work. I have to use the windows driver since official ones are not available.

Got to get rid of CRTs, extra movement of the fovea slows down reading and wears your eyes out fast .

Rivatuner does this on XP, I'm not sure if it works on Vista.

Let me know if you find a fix as I'll be moving back to CRT soon too

cant post a link yet but i believe that a program called Direct Refresh v1.2
will allow you to do this in vista unless you have a 8800 driver i believe, should be able to google it for more info

Re: Vista x64 and refresh rates..

No i couldnt get a link for it either.
You should be able to force the system to give you the 85 hertz you require without the aid of any apps anyway. I havent really bothered to use vista for games however I would look at the following.
Right Click on your desktop and choose personalize.
goto display settings then click on advanced settings then monitor and in the drop down box change it to 85 hertz. If you cannot see the 85 hz then untick the hide resolutions that this display cannot display (or something like that anyway ) and click apply all the way and ok until you are back to the desktop.
Now I am not sure if there is another option where you would change the resolution but if there is change that to 85 as well.
Now when you go into the game there are two possible things that would cause the screen to stick on 60
1 the game is set to use that in the config so in something like RTCW we would type into the console of the game
/seta r_displayrefresh "85" to set the games refresh rate to 85
then /vid_restart to restart the video display in the game.
2 the v-sync is on or off try toggling it on or off. It basically should lock the refresh rate of the monitor to the game. so if you have your game on 85 but your monitor on 60 then v-sync on will drop your game to 60.

post your game if you want and I shall see what it is you need to either add to the config or enter into the console.

the other thing you have to consider is that your monitor wont support that refresh rate at your set resolution. ie my 22 inch wont do more than 60hz at 1680 x 1050 however if i drop it to 1078x1024 then i can go up to 75 etc.

    Hope that makes some sense

Re: Vista x64 and refresh rates..

It's a known vista bug, if the game does not have an inbuilt refreshrate changer then you will be playing it at 60hz regardless of the windows desktop refreshrate unless you have a working refreshrate forcer outside of the game - no download links available for that.
