XP SP3 and USB mice - Quite a show stopper!

Anyone that is using HP business desktops and considering Installing XP SP3, please read this.

I am currently working on creating new images for all of our desktops based on XP SP3 and so far, for 2 different models (4 machines) have all shown identical problems.
USB mice cause them to crash. They endlessly reboot if the mouse is plugged in, and if you unplug it, they boot fine. Until you plug a mouse in, then a moment after they beging installing the driver, they bluescreen.

All machines have freshly formatted HDD's and XP Sp3 is deployed initially on them using RIS (The OS image was uploaded to RIS by RIS legacy to an XP install share with SP3 integrated)
The RIS images pre load the network drivers and the intel ICH drivers, nothing else.
During the build and the installation of all of the drivers, everything seems fine - I used a USB mouse to confirm this.
The machines are then RIPREPped and their answer files are populated.
Once this image is loaded onto the same desktop or other desktops of the same type) the problem occurs. XP cannot boot with the USB mouse plugged in.
The models affected so far are:
    DC7600 SFF and DC7800 USDT
I will not be trying it on any other models until it is sorted on these ones.
The problem for me is that we cannot continue testing for general deployment as its likely the images will be changed enough to require testing to start from scratch.

I knew this would happen. Poeple assume its the default HP image as they caused so many problems even though its pretty clear from my post that the images are created by me

Re: XP SP3 and USB mice - Quite a show stopper!

Its a problem with the way RIS works.
The usbhub.sys driver on all affected machines was an ancient one from SP2 even though before they were uploaded to the WDS server they had the correct version. MS provided me with a completely irrelevant hotfix since the USBhub.sys on XP sp3 was a later version than that included with the hotfix they provided me with.
I removed the SP2 based RIS install directory from the server and all is fine.
The problem is that these machines are all in testing as is SP3 and the live images are all SP2 based.
So I've converted them to .WIM files and will be deploying them using WDS rather than RIS for now and I have copied the SP2 based RIS install back to its original directory.

Re: XP SP3 and USB mice - Quite a show stopper!

This week we created our new "images" to upload VIA Microsoft RIS. We have several "White Boxes" for our user community. One motherboard (MPCB) is an Intel D945GCCR and the other is a Foxconn. BOTH have the Intel 82801G USB "chipset" or controller.

We applied Windows XP Pro SP3 along with other patches. All went well with the upload using RIPREP and all went well with the image download. That is until we plugged in a USB mouse or USB flash drive which causes the PC to reboot. YIKES!!

We upgraded the BIOS and then I installed Intel's latest chipset INF driver version 9.0.0.10117. The problem with this utility is if it detects an older version present, it WILL NOT install. You need to extract the files with -a -p c:\folder switch. You then need to go into Device Manager under SYSTEM DEVICES and RIGHT CLICK each 82801G device and choose UPDATE DRIVER. You may have 4 or 5 items. There also may be two reboots.

So, THINKING I had it solved, I re-ran RIPREP and downloaded the new image to my fleet of PCs. USB device STILL CRASHES my system!!

I went back into DEVICE MANAGER and under UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS I deleted all the 82801G devices and the matching USB ROOT HUB disappeared as they were deleted. I rebooted Windows and allowed the operating system to "auto detect" the "newly found" devices. Once the were all there, I crossed my fingers.

    No crash!! Problem fixed!

    HTH somebody
