OS chioce for a new build surfing PC

    Hi,

I plan installing Ubuntu Desktop on a second machine because it’s free and I am interested in trying out something different as I’ve only ever used MS systems. Hopefully it would fly on a E2180 with 1gb (more than I could say for Vista). Can people recommend this as a valid OS choice?

Stupid question - In the future could I network this with my Vista machine or do they both need to be running a MS OS?

Thanks in advance for your input

You'll have no issues running ubuntu on that spec PC mate, it certainly will knock the stuffings out of Vista for performance

i'd suggest you use the 32-bit version - with only a gig of ram, 64-bit gains you nothing, and browser plugins (like flash) are better behaved

    otherwise, go nuts

yeh ubuntu should run well on that... I am using fedora at the moment because it supports my wireless card and it is a nice OS... not sure about networking with MS though, probably can be done

I use Fedora (Core 6) on a modest AMC socket A system - runs a treat with Windows and other Linux machines - and serves webpages in its spare time! (and a bit of mail serving)

I'd second that. I chucked this on an old PC I recieved for free recenty.

Free PC started out with 1.7GHz Celeron with just 128MB RAM. I found that was a too pony for Ubuntu, it did run, but with bad ass lag!
So for about a fiver on ebay I hooked up with a 2GHz P4 and another 256MB RAM. Now it runs like a dream. Probably quicker than my craptop that's running XP with 1GB ram and a Sempron mobile.

I recon Ubuntu + Intel D945CGFL + 512MB-1GB RAM and HDD would make for an awsome low cost system for web browsing and general functionality that most people use PC's for. Intel's D945DCFL Atom board well outstrips a VIA 2Ghz C7 for performance.

    I second that.

Either way, Ubuntu is absolutely a valid choice for what you describe

Re: OS chioce for a new build surfing PC

Now I'm thinking about 2gb of PC6400 800mhz RAM as the board only has RAM 2 slots, thought I'd spend another £15 just in case I put a Vista on it in the future

Would the 64bit Ubuntu run on this better with 2gb or is 32bit still the way to go with this spec?

Re: OS chioce for a new build surfing PC

See directhex's post above. 32 bit will be fine - some of the 64 bit plugins for the 64 bit versions of Opera and Firtefox are flaky, and as you intend to use this for general surfing, that is probably more important. 64 bit only really comes into its own if you are planning on usingh more than 4GB ram anyway.

As for ram, 2Gb is probably overkill anyway - 1Gb will be more than adequate (although as memory is so cheap, you may not consider the saving of 1GB worthwhile)

(I have two machines here - running Fedora - one is running 64 bit - with 2GB and is using just over 900MB of RAM and 264KB of swap. The other is running 32 bit with 1GB RAM, running a mailserver and webserver and is using 470MB RAM and 250MB swap. Both are running Gnome as the front end. (Unnecessarily on the webserver!!)
