How Many Antivirus/AntiSpyware/Firewalls Should I Run?

I'm currently running the following programs

ZoneAlarm Security Suite v7 (license expired, not intending to renew as I've bought Kaspersky Security Suite)

    AVG AntiSpyware (free version)
    AVG AntiVirus 7.5

Spybot 1.4 (1.5 is a bit slow so haven't upgraded yet)

    Ad Aware 2008 (free version)

I'm thinking of upgrading to version 8 of AVG (free) as it has both antivirus & antispyware in one package.

Am I running too many programs?

ONE firewall, and ONE antivirus - Kespersky looks good, but as many anti spyware as you like, I would use both adaware and spybot

    One of each.

One resident AntiSpyware Scanner and as many others that have manual scans as you deem necessary.

thse sort of programs conflict if you have multiple programs of the same type, thats why you should only use one of each.

over to you directhex to quote me for truth?

Re: How Many Antivirus/AntiSpyware/Firewalls Should I Run?

well you can have one realtime anti virus, one realtime antispyware and one firewall.
but you can use as many on demand scanners as you like for example
    superantispyware
    malware bytes antispyware
also you can run a scan with drweb cure it
drweb cure it is an on demand scanner with the full detection and removal as the installed version of drweb. to update you need to redownload it.

spybot and adaware are old hat these days utry the ones i suggested above.
i liked it alot so i brought a license for drweb. you can install just the scanner for windows copy the folder to a usb pen, uninstall it and run a scan and update it from the folder on the usb pen.

Re: How Many Antivirus/AntiSpyware/Firewalls Should I Run?

Another vote for Kaspersky Internet Security here. Best one out there, uses less resources than the Norton and McAfee hogs.

If you use a PC for nothing else than Office stuff and surfing, you may as well switch to Linux.

Re: How Many Antivirus/AntiSpyware/Firewalls Should I Run?

Just running Avira tbh, never have any problems.

Windows defender gets to run a scan occasionally but not a lot going on in truth.

AVG, Norton, McAfee are all hideous resource hogs.

I'd be interested in anything with a smaller footprint that Avira.

Re: How Many Antivirus/AntiSpyware/Firewalls Should I Run?

    try drweb then
should be a smaller footprint than avira, you can get a 30 day trial license and then pay if you like it.
remember with avira if you get infected it wont be able to clean your system. on the other hand drweb is very good at cleaning.

Re: How Many Antivirus/AntiSpyware/Firewalls Should I Run?

I've got McAfee security suite (provided by my ISP), I also have spybot but since I've had McAffe I don't seem to be getting any positives on spybot so it must be doing something right. The only things that annoy me about McAffee are 1. Start up time is slower with it and 2. You can't shut it down? where as before I had AVG and zone alarm, both of which I could just close down if I wanted.

Kaspersky sounds really good but I'm loathed to pay for it when I'm already provided with a fairly decent security suite (with 3 licenses) by O2.

quick question... Has anyone used McAfee or Kaspersky on an asus eee? I (still) considering getting one and if I put my 3rd Mcafee license on there I think it would be a major performance killer, and from what I hear Kaspersky is very slim and has lower resource use.
