It's normally something that you would request at the time of purchase from your vendor.

    Re: downgrade vista to xp

If this is on a current system the only way is to remove Vista and replace it with a fresh install of XP.

    Re: downgrade vista to xp

On what? A laptop.. PC? Custom or store bought?

For laptops you genereally have to change the hard drive controller from ACHI to ATA (and disable whatever it tells you in bios in order to do that, flash something or other)

There is a way of doing it and keeping ACHI but i've forgotten..

This is assuming you've slapped the xp disk in and it has told you it can't find a hard drive. Otherwise just slap the disk in and do a fresh install.

    Re: downgrade vista to xp

For ACHI its largely just finding the right drivers

http://www.msfn.org/board/How-to-ena...X-t109450.html Gives a rough idea on whats needed for a current install.

    Re: downgrade vista to xp

I think you need a retail copy of vista to do it officially via the Microsoft downgrade scheme. Not certain about that, but I'm sure I read it somewhere on this forum.

downgrade rights are included only as part of a vista business or vista ultimate license. if you don't run one of those two OSes, you cannot downgrade without buying a new copy of xp.

    Re: downgrade vista to xp

you'd need to boot from the XP install media, essentially wiping the Vista install (so backup any data first) - you can't just run the autorun in Windows and Downgrade to XP.

    no

which part of "downgrade rights are included only as part of a vista business or vista ultimate license. if you don't run one of those two OSes, you cannot downgrade without buying a new copy of xp." isn't clear?

    Re: downgrade vista to xp

You need to have 2 separate serial numbers for each PC. so 2 XP discs.

To put XP on the Laptop:

    1. Boot laptop and enter bios.
    2. Make sure that the Boot setting is set to boot from CD/DVD
    3. Put XP disc in Laptop
    4. F10 to save settings from bios
    5. Press any key to start XP install when asked
    6. Follow on screen promps (Formay Hard Drive etc)
    7. Make sure you have drivers for the Laptop (Chipset, Graphics, Sound, Lan)

    Have fun!!

Directhex answered the first part quite clearly - similarly the answer to the second part is also no. You need a separate licence - retail or OEM for each computer the software is installed on. Doing otherwise is a violation of your licence agreement.
