    Moving from OSX to Vista

Right, basically built my new rig and installed Vista Home Premium, before I was using an iMac and was wondering what the best way to transfer files over was. Ive got a external hard drive but have had no luck, everytime I go to copy the files over from the drive to vista, I get read errors.
As I understand it, if I format the drive as NTFS, I can't write on it on OSX.
I've spent the last 4 hours trying to copy various things over, and keep running into trouble.

Is there a way I can just link the two using an ethernet cable and copy them over like that? Tried googling but couldnt seem to get anything meaningful/that works.

    Thanks

EDIT: I can read the files from the disk, I just cant copy them! Very annoying!

Re: Moving from OSX to Vista

If you can open them the OS can obviously read from the disk - very odd.

Whats the exact message its giving you?

Re: Moving from OSX to Vista

    Many options...

Probably the easiest is to network the two machines. You should be able to see your iMac from Windows, and vice versa. If you've got gigabit ethernet, it'll be nice and quick to copy files over.

Re: Moving from OSX to Vista

I just did disk check on the drive, and started saying that many of the folders were unreadable.
    The message is :

" Cannot read from the source file or disk"

How would I go about networking the two? I am absolutley awful with networks. lol

    Cheers

Re: Moving from OSX to Vista

Are the two currently networked? If so, it makes things pretty easy and we can guide you through

Is the disk you're trying to read from FAT32 - not sure why that error would happen unless something else had the file open or there actually is a problem with the disk.

You'll need to format the disk to fat32 if you're gonna read/write to it from a mac and then read it on a windows machine...

Re: Moving from OSX to Vista

Yeah, its formatted to fat 32, the two arent network together, basically im too far away from the router to wire both of them, so theyre both wireless.

I'm starting to think that it mayt be something wrong with the disk, but its still confusing how I can actually read the files straight from the disk....

Re: Moving from OSX to Vista

You could set it up via a workgroup and share the files, but I've no idea how complicated or how hard it is to do on a mac.

The easiest way I can think of is to install a FTP server on Vista like http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server
Then just FTP into it via the mac and copy across what you want. Won't be super fast over wireless, but its certain to work once setup

If he formats the disk - he'll lose all his files, which rather defeats the object of the exercise.

The basic steps are to obtain an ethernet crossover cable to connect the two machine's ethernet ports together.

Prior to that you will need to ensure that networking is set up omn both machines, and that file sharing is also enabled.

You will also need to set up manual IP addresses. Sy for the Mac 192.168.1.1 and on the Windows PC 192.168.1.2. THe subnet mask will default to 255.255.255.0 whichis fine.

Provided file sharing and permissions are set up correctly, the Windows machine should see some folders in the MAC, and vice versa. You can then copy teh files you want, either using the Mac or the Windows machine.

How does it work? Each machine is reading its own file system, which it understands. The file transfer is handled by another protocol (SMB) that both machines uunderstand, and is independent of the file system.

The reason you can't just connect the MAC drive to the Windows machine is because Macs natively use a file system called HFS+, Windows uses NTFS and reading a non native file system is 'tricky' (It can be done, but you want to keepi t simple!)

The common system is FAT 32, which both Macs and Windows can read, but unless you have a blank disk, which you can format (as A FAT 32 disk) and use for the transfer you cannot convert one system to another without losing the data.

At the end of that waffle... you can

Either -= obtain a blank Hard drive with a USB interface and format it to FAT 32 and copy the files from the Mac to that - and then to the PC

or - set up a simple network as I described earlier and transfer the files directly.
