i need to su a linux server ?? HELP!

ok some devs setup hlstatx for my company and its been dropped on poor gonzo's shoulders..

i mailed the guy to ask how i set this up and got this answer..

    Hi,

There are a few things that need to be done for each game server.

An entry needs adding to the file (need su to root to access this file):
    /var/www/hlstats/hlx/perl/hlstats.conf

Once you have finished making the changes the application that receives data from the gameservers needs restarting. Run the following commands:
    su hlstats
    /var/www/hlstats/hlx/perl/run_hlstats restart
    exit

    The password for hlstats is: {removed}

now i have no idea where i start whilst sat on my winodws pc, can anyone tell me what i need to install to connect to this rig plz ?

i have an ip and a password, thats about it so far lol..

before he realises i know bugger all about linux i thought i would try here 1st

    help me plz

Re: i need to su a linux server ?? HELP!

Shame I looked at putting HLStatsX on my server as well but what a mission it is; need your own database, separate sub domain and all sorts of editing. Looks like a nightmare to set up so I just left my server with the simple mani mod stats feature. Definitely not as good but it doesn't cost anything nor does it take a coding course in order to be able to install it.

As for the linux server... I have absolutely no clue how to operate linux, sorry

Re: i need to su a linux server ?? HELP!

Surely you can just connect to the rig via standard FTP programs.

Once in it should be a reasonably easy job to setup the script, saying that though i haven't set up a server since the days of 1.6.

    Goodluck!

Re: i need to su a linux server ?? HELP!

From your Windows PC, install PuTTy, start that, type in your IP, when prompted, type in your username and password (the password wont be echo'ed with stars or dots, this is normal, so keep a mental note of how you're typing it). When you see the bash prompt (should look something like: username@hostname #), type `su -' without the ticks, and enter the root password. Depending on the distirbution installed on the server, there should be an easy to use text editor like 'nano' or 'pico', a `echo $EDITOR' should tell you what the system default is, if it's vi or vim you'll have a tougher time editing any configuration files.

*edit* other notes: you can only 'su' if your user is in the 'wheel' group. Also the server may have 'sudo' installed which is a much better tool, syntax is `sudo program --args', and it has an 'sudoedit' which simply calls $EDITOR with a syntax of `sudoedit /path/to/file.conf'.

It somewhat helps when you state what you're doing and what errors you're getting in kind

Re: i need to su a linux server ?? HELP!

nah m8 dont worry about it, im not. way over my head and i dont fancy learning all this as i have no real use for it tbh..

i was told i need to edit hlstats.conf to add a server..

i logged in and used vi hlstats.conf and got a load of info up and dont have a bloody clue as to what i add, so i have given up.

would be a lot easier if i could ftp the file to my desktop and put it back when done, but no this is a unix dev and thats far to simple..

Actually you can, get WinSCP, install it, and connect to the same ssh service on the server and you can use it like an ordinary FTP program. Just use the username 'root' to connect so you'll have permissions to read/write the file.

Although the experience may be of more value to you then you may know in the future.

Re: i need to su a linux server ?? HELP!

Did you verify the changes?.. log into the server again with putty and type `less /path/to/file.conf'.

You should be able to restart the program as root, but... I don't know if it will drop privileges correctly, and there's a chance it wont, a proper init script is usually what's meant to be used for this kind of thing, and it automatically reduces privileges to the configured username. I can't tell you to send it the hangup signal, because I can't be certain it will correctly handle this and reread the config file, or just die.

Another thing you could do is change the hlstats account password with a `passwd hlstats' command, but again I can't be certain that wont have a knock-on effect on other components of the hlstats system.

But anyway, good luck, hopefully you should hear from the developer soon.
