    Laptop boot problems.

    Hi all, brief history.

Got a packard bell laptop from a mate who said he would like it wiping. no probs.(laptop worked ok but slow) i rebooted it in to the packard bell recovery mode and the recovery failed and fails every time!

I thought thats fine i have all the drivers i will just pop a fresh copy of XP on it. then i found out that the cd-rom doesnt work.

now the system wont boot up in to normal mode, i have slaved the HDD in a pc and it reads the recovery partition where there is a boot.ini file along with Cabs, Drivers etc. problem is if i try to do anything with it it crashes the PC then says windows delayed write error.

I have put a new Hdd in the laptop and it tries to boot off it and gives the obvious no OS error. Oh and to top it all of it doesnt have the option to boot from USB.

    My question is

Is there any method to install XP Cab files on to a HDD so that i can pop it back in to the laptop and start the windows installation from the bit after the CD install?

Or any other suggestions to try?

Hmm, Cant believe no one has any ideas! I think the only option is a PXE server.

    Oh well.

    Re: Laptop boot problems.

The only way I can think of doing it would be to emulate the CD directory layout on the hard drive and then boot off that emulated disk. Obviously do that on a fresh hard drive, and manually copy all the files off the CD onto hard drive. The problem then is the boot loader on sector 0. You might get rounfd that by booting off a Dos floppy, then running the setup.exe from the Floppy, which 'might' transfer control to the hard drive.

The problem then would be creation of the partitions on the hard drive - which could overwrite wahtr you are installing - so you would need to consider that issue.

This is only a tentative thought - no idea if it would work in practice.

Starnge that the CD Rom doesn't work - which suggests a hardware fault on the laptop.

    Re: Laptop boot problems.

before i went too far i'd be tempted to run memtest86+ on it.

Delayed Write Failed messages can be caused by faults in memory as well as missing drivers!

    Re: Laptop boot problems.

The drive was being slaved in a caddy and i tried it on 4 computers (3 XP one vista) and i got the delayed error message on those.

I couldnt run memtest on the laptop as the cdrom is buggered!

    Thanks for the input though.

Few problems there and to many "mights!" the laptop doesnt have a floppy and wont boot from usb!

I am screwed! PXE i think is the last resort. My mate is sorting an image for me now but if that fails i dont know what to do.

    Re: Laptop boot problems.

When ypou say won't boot from USB - do you mean that isn't a BIOS option - or that it is an option but doesn't work?

It does sound as if there is a hardware problem with the laptopif the CDROM drive isn't working (or the replacement)

One thing to check on that though - the connections. I replaced laptop CD ROM and found that the various mounting screws had to be tight and the brackets aligned so that the laptop miniature IDE connector (if it is IDE) was correctly located and making the connections.

    Re: Laptop boot problems.

download the pre-compiled bootable Memtest86+ and put it on the HDD via another PC?

i think the laptop is quite buggered.

    Re: Laptop boot problems.

the bios doesnt support boot over USB. The new cdrom (i believe) was in properly, it felt like it was.

I have spotted a bios update which can run from CD so when it is working again i may be able to get it to run the update from a usb cdrom. That may support usb boot options that may cure all problems.

Seems a shame to just write it off because the cd rom doesnt work. such a waste!
