Question XP SP3/VistaSP1 for 8600M GT for Gaming!

basically tonite I'm buying a C2D 2.2ghz 4gb ram 8600M GT lappy will be putting my 320gb sata into it (5400rpm but yeah) so I'm wondering should I go for xp sp3 (I believe you can use 4gb in this now right?) and get a far better fps in games or sacrafice this and go for vista sp1 64bit and loose some fps?
purely gaming comes first so what kind of fps would we be talking about loosing for say crysis which is intensive useage to use as a good scale for where it counts...
everything else will be played on the elite/ps3 so this is purely for the specs above so the most fps counts.as i can't justify spending loads when i hardly play games on a pc hence previously selling my quadcore gaming rig... so basically as much bang for buck as i can get outta the above is what I'm after.

Good riddance. Wish I'd done it about a year ago.

It doesn't matter what service pack you put on a 32 bit OS, you're still not going to get the benefit of the full 4Gb of RAM. To be honest I wouldn't be getting too excited about gaming performance on a laptop unless you're spending ridiculous money (which it doesn't look like you are)

I get better performance out of vista sp1 x64 in games than I do in 32bit vista so don't believe the scaremongering about vista and gaming. Since SP1 its on par with XP if not better in most cases. I've never had a pick of bother with x64 ultimate with gaming.

Nope you still can't use 4gb in XP Sp3. As for whether you'd be ok with Vista you'll have to read all the opinion pieces on it I think there's arguements either side.

Either way it's not going to make much difference in FPS for a game like crysis, as you'll be completely held back by the graphics card anyway.

Yup, that 8600M video card is really going to hold you back...it isn't that great...

Re: XP SP3/VistaSP1 for 8600M GT for Gaming!

what are you talking about yawnnnn.
I never said serious gaming i just asked a simple question based on the hardware...
as someone above said xp sp3 does utilize 4gb of ram...
as for the card youtube it.it'll run crysis on medium settings on 1024x768 which is more than adequate for laptop gaming... i merely chose crysis as an example because it is graphics card hungry so making the right operating choice would benefit here.
    obviously I wouldn't run it in DX10...
and COD4/Quake4/CSS/Test Drive Unlim/BioShock all seem to run nice at medium settings in either 1280x800 or 1440x900 so i'd hardly call it not a good card for gaming its not like its that pathetic 8400gs 128mb ram or a x3100gma card...considering i didn't say serious gaming.it's a laptop after all... you can't exactly have time to game anywhere seriously if your needing to take it back and forth hence why this will be fine for me... when i have proper seat time i'll use the elite/ps3...

so if anyone wants to actually answer my thread without flaming complete rubbish at me and base it on facts/benchmarks for what I'm asking with either links or related hardware experience that'd be NICE

as all I'm asking really is for example anyone got similar lappy hardware and tried both xp sp3 and vista sp1 for any of the above games and what were their experiences and what os came out better fps wise....

    cheers

Your original post stated that the laptop was purely for gaming, you chose an incredibly system intensive game as an example. My point was that if you wanted something "purely for gaming" you would have been better off putting your money into a desktop.

I've no benchmarks, and you clearly have no respect for my opinion so I'll leave you to this thread.

Re: XP SP3/VistaSP1 for 8600M GT for Gaming!

because your stating the obvious.i wouldn't of said i was getting that laptop if i wasn't aware of the more powerful parts.theres obviously a reason to why i've chosen it.
as for desktop gaming rig i've just sold one so I want to use this for my pc gaming as everything else i get for the ps/elite...
i wasn't mainly on about you more the fanboys after... i chose crysis as its intensive yeah so every frame matters on a card like this...
i have however edited my initial thread to make it very clear now.
    hope you see my point

Re: XP SP3/VistaSP1 for 8600M GT for Gaming!

Not sure how the 8600M stacks up against the ATI 3xxx mobile parts but as you say you're getting 4GB RAM then i'd say Vista 64bit is the way to go.

From your comments i'm not sure which res thelaptop will be, 1440x900?
I benchmarked crysis on my desktop in XP and Vista with my 3870s in Crossfire , they're not the same Catalyst or Crysis so may not be an ideal comparison but here's the non-crossfire comparisons:

Under XP Crysis 1.1 Catalyst 8.3
    Run #1- DX9 1680x1050 AA=No AA, 32 bit test, Quality: Medium ~~ Overall Average FPS: 53.32

    Under Vista x64 SP1 Crysis 1.2 Catalyst 8.5 DX9
    Run #1- DX9 1680x1050 AA=No AA, 32 bit test, Quality: Medium ~~ Overall Average FPS: 46.315

My processor is an E6600 so not much diff from your laptop, i'd expect you'll get decent framerates for Crysis out of it and even better out of the standalone expansion.

No, It doesn't. And it never will. In fact Vista x86 also doesn't even post sp1.

However, XP SP3 and Vista x86 will REPORT 4 GB of RAM if you have 4GB installed.
    They still can't use it.
If you don't believe me, get 4GB and a 32 bit copy of Windows. Open the task manager. Tell me what it says for Physical memory.
If you want to use all 4GB, you need a motherboard that supports memory remapping and a 64 bit OS.

Re: XP SP3/VistaSP1 for 8600M GT for Gaming!

i thought there was something in the release notes about addressing 4gb of ram... maybe it was 3.75gb and 256 to the graphics but it was definitely mentioned...
i did want to run home premium 64 vista sp1...

as for res... its 1680x1050 but... i was going to run it at 1024x(whatever it is in widescreen lol) as I've never had a problem with gaming at a non native res... for example my old 1280x800 dell x1300 ati mobility i used to play stalker and things like that in 800xwidescreen res's and it was fine etc etc... so probably in a 1024 or whatever... as i say though i'm not wanting nor expecting high graphics so yeah i reckon should get around 50 in 1024 on medium... someone on youtube who has exact setup has 25-30fps with full AA on 1024 and medium-high settings so sounds promising.might even be 1440x900 but not sure.
    cheers for your input
