    website question: how do i...

just thinking about building a site for a rowing club have a fairly good idea what I want to do in my head but one thing I'm not sure on is how to make a database of sorts to hold contact details of people (such as address, tel, email etc) that can be accessed via the website (password protected of course) and if need be emails sent out a-la-newsletter stylee by an admin/approved user...is there somewhere I can read up on something for how to do this or has anyone any suggestions how to accomplish this feat?

ASP, PHP, Ruby on Rails, and a number of other dynamic website scripting engines/frameworks can achieve this, if you can't be bothered learning any of the languages involved, Dreamweaver can do this with GUI wizardry, but it isn't pretty for long term maintainablity of the site.

yeah. was thinking of setting something up in wordpress or similar, attaching various things like gallery contact form etc and also a list of people past/present who get info and news about things as they happen really. sort of standard stuff but wondering if it could be encapsulated within the setup of a site rather than heft around a huge email cc list...!

True, there's a number of CMS systems you could try out, drupal is one of the leaner/meaner ones, it has a number of plugins that could suit.
