Thread: windows 2003 cant see anything on my harddrive...

    Question windows 2003 cant see anything on my harddrive...

    ok,

    maybe someone could tell me whats going on, cos i dont get it...

    i installed windows 2003 onto my 'spare' 80gb sata drive, and left windows 2000 on my 60gb ide drive... as not to stuff anything up, i unplugged my ide drive during the 2003 install... anyhow, it installed ok, installed the drivers for mobo etc, turned system off, plugged the ide harddrive in.. and although it appears in device manager, its not there in 'my computer', and if i right click->properties in device manager, it wants me to populate the drive... will populating it just basically wipe all the partitions on there and create a new one, cos thats not good if all my data is on there.... so changed the boot order in the bios, and now i'm back on the ide drive... and that can see the 80gb sata drive with windows2003 on.. why not the other way around??!

    can you see the drive in disk management? (right click on my computer, manage, disk management)

    yup, i can, says its active, but it cant see any partitions or anything on it, i'll reboot to windows 2003, might be more useful to fiddle..

    oh my god i am so damn stupid....

    i right clicked on the drive, and did 'change drive letter and paths..' set it to be f:, and its there wooo!

    yeh, well i didnt know i had to heh, i'm used to windows 2000 which does it automatically step back this windows 2003 malarky heh, still i've got about 172 days of the 180 day trial to have fun with it,

    Well hey man thats part of windows 2003 extra security. It doesnt enable everything automatically like in windows 2000, it waits for you to do it manually. Which is good!

    Not in beta - its now RTM and on sale, has been for a couple of months now.

    180 days trial here

    You will need to register as it uses Product activation.
    However does appear to allow you to re-activate (guess who installed with his BIOS clock set to wrong year, corrected it and my evalution ended 30 minutes after I installed it! )

    i downloaded it off the site.. was 540meg or so, they sent me the serial via e-mail

    then i went to http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/ (dont think that is anything illegal, they got rid of the TweakNT link, so as far as i can see it's kosher) which tells you how to enable everything - ie sound and stuff heh

    I had that problem, moved a disk over, imported it fine, then froze when it wouldn't read. Then it click. Ohhhh assing a drive letter. Duh!
