    Folding Questions

Ok, so I started folding on my newly built computer a few days ago.

    I have: Core2Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz, ATI HD4850, 4gb RAM

At the moment I have the console version of F@H running on both cores.

I've heard that you can run F@H on a graphics card. I tried downloading the software but it said that my GPU wasn't supported. Would it be better to run it on my gpu aswell? Or just to have it on my 2 cores? If I run it on my gpu do I have to sacrifice 1 core to help it? And how would I get it to work?

Also, I'm using the FAH LogStats program to monitor what's going on, but it only seems to show work units per day (about 10) and just says 0.0 for points per day. Will it ever show my how many points per day I should get?

    Re: Folding Questions

Hmm, I've been searching, but I'm having trouble finding it. Do you mean on the Hexus website or forum? I can't find it on either

I've just been having a search around and it looks like the 177.41 driver is for nVidia cards, am I missing something?

    Re: Folding Questions

make sure you're downloading the GPU2 client click

i'd run one F@H client on the CPU (affinity 0), and then set the GPU2 client to have affinity 1, to use the 2nd core...

tho folding on the 48xx cards seems to be pretty naff at the moment compared to the nvidia cards

oh and you can download FahMon to check your progress

    Thanks streetster!

The only problem is that I tried running the GPU2 client and it says my GPU isn't supported, how do I fix it?

    Re: Folding Questions

I was under the impression that there were no drivers for the Hd4800s, only what comes on the cd with the card. If there is something else I'm not sure how to find it :/

    Re: Folding Questions

Hey, not sure whether you are using xp/vista, but

There are the ATI 'hotfix' drivers which most people seem to be using with 48x0 cards:

Windows XP 32bit/64bit or Windows Vista 32bit/64bit.

Or if you are using Vista you can try the 8.7 beta drivers available here.

I'm folding on vista and both the 8.6 hotfix and 8.7 beta drivers work fine for me - hopefully that'll get you up and folding

    Re: Folding Questions

I installed the hotfix earlier today and that got it working, thanks for that though!

Hmm, should I really be getting just 400 PPD on my dual core e8400?

    Re: Folding Questions

theres a thread a few down from this one about PPD... i get around 1100 on my 4870, which is awful, but better than not folding at all... is that 400 from just running 2xCPU clients (you might get more points running the SMP client) or 1xCPU + 1xGPU?

    Re: Folding Questions

Yeah, I'm getting about 200 PPD on each core.

When I tried the GPU2 client it seemed really odd. When I went to the display it wouldn't start processing some test data and say "core not active". After a bit of that it would carry on doing the folding, and then it would stop. I'm not sure if that was just what the display was showing or if everything was fine behind the scenes. I still had both my CPU processes running, maybe that was causing problems.

How do you even get rid of one of the processes? And how do you tell the GPU2 what core to use?

    Re: Folding Questions

How do I uninstall the console client

Also yeah, you'll need one core available for the GPU2 client to use...

when you fire up F@H, load up Task Manager (ctrl+shift+escape), and then find the Folding@Home process, rightclick, Affinity, and change it to CPU0 (ie untick the CPU1 box).

then, when you fire up the GPU2 client, go to task manager, and set it to use CPU1 (ie untick CPU0 box)

In order to have an immediate effect, if you then find the processes FaHCore_82.exe (CPU client) and FaHCore_11.exe (GPU2 client) and set them to use CPU0 and CPU1 respectively using the method above...

After those work units have completed, the F@H client will spawn new FahCore_xx processes using the same affinity as you gave it initially

There is a program called imagecfg that is meant to allow you to permanently change the affinity, and you can also use the command-line command 'switch /affinity 0 [f@h shortcut here]' but i couldnt get either of those methods working reliably... so i've given up on the CPU client and just run the GPU2 one... *sigh*

    Re: Folding Questions

Wow, thanks for all that info!

I'm running the GPU client + 1 CPU and I'm getting *almost* 2000 PPD \o/

I stopped the process that was running on core1 and then just ran GPU2 and it automatically started using the second core.

If only the folding on my processor gave me more than 200 PPD
